A crime scene is often silent. There may be no eyewitnesses, no fingerprints, and no obvious clues. Yet a tiny drop of blood, a strand of hair with its root, or even a few skin cells left behind can tell an extraordinary story.

Hidden inside those cells is DNAโ€”a molecular record unique to almost every individual. But comparing an entire human genome for every investigation would be far too slow and computationally expensive. Scientists needed a faster approach. That solution became the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

Instead of reading an entire genome, CODIS examines 20 standardized genetic markers (19 STR loci and the Amelogenin marker). The combination of these markers forms a DNA profile that is extraordinarily unlikely to be shared by two unrelated individualsโ€”making it as unique as a fingerprint, but written in DNA.

From a tiny biological sample to a database match, the process follows five key steps:

1. DNA is extracted from blood, saliva, hair roots, or other biological evidence.
2. The CODIS genetic markers are amplified using PCR.
3. Capillary electrophoresis determines the allele pattern at each marker.
4. These patterns are converted into a numerical DNA profile.
5. The profile is searched against millions of records in CODIS to identify potential matches.

A major global review led by researchers at the University of British Columbia found that mRNA vaccines are safe, highly effective, and important for future medicine.

The review looked at evidence from several sources, including laboratory research, clinical trials, real-world vaccine effectiveness data, and ongoing safety monitoring after vaccination.

After billions of mRNA vaccine doses worldwide, the review found strong evidence that these vaccines protect against serious infectious diseases, especially severe COVID-19. This protection includes lower risks of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

The review also found that mRNA vaccines have been tested and monitored carefully across many groups, including children, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems.

Chinaโ€™s stem cell research is becoming one of the most watched medical stories in diabetes treatment. Scientists have reported early clinical results where lab-grown islet cells helped the body produce insulin again, the hormone needed to control blood sugar.

In one type 1 diabetes case, a 25-year-old woman received insulin-producing cells made from her own reprogrammed cells. According to reports published in Cell and covered by Nature, she began producing her own insulin within about three months and remained free from insulin injections after one year.

Another pilot study in Cell Discovery described a 59-year-old man with long-term type 2 diabetes and poor insulin secretion. After receiving personalized stem cell-derived islet tissue, his insulin use stopped by week 11, and researchers reported improved blood sugar control during long follow-up.

Prof. Hadiza Nuhu is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development at Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria. She is also a multiple award-winning herbal medicine practitioner.

Born in Kano on the 23rd of August 1965. She holds a PhD in Pharmacognosy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a certificate in Information technology from Newcastle College, UK.

She is a member of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy and Botanical Society of Nigeria. She is also the Research Director, the association of commonwealth traditional medicine practitioners, West Africa.

In 2009, her 12years of research paid off as Dr Hadiza produced Herb 25, an anti-malaria drug which she describes as, โ€œan enhanced ethnomedical preparation from a screened combination of herbs that have been used in Nigeria traditionally to treat malaria.โ€

Herb 25 is a trusted anti-malaria to treat Chloroquine-resistant malaria. Registered by NAFDAC. It dispensed in tea bags, easy to use in hot water. It will be the first time a University in Nigeria will successfully produce such a drug.
