HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE CAN BE QUIETLY DAMAGING YOUR BODY — WITHOUT WARNING, W.H.O SAYS
Here is what many people don't realize about high blood pressure:
You can feel completely fine while your blood pressure is already too high.
You can wake up feeling normal.
Go to work.
Eat your favourite food.
Talk with your family.
Sleep normally.
And still have hypertension.
That is what makes it so easy to ignore.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 22 million adults aged 30–79 in Nigeria were living with hypertension in 2024.
But here's the part that deserves serious attention:
Approximately 19.1 million of them did not have their blood pressure controlled.
Only about 13% had controlled hypertension.
🩸 WHY IS IT SO EASY TO MISS?
Because high blood pressure often doesn't give you a clear warning sign.
WHO states that people with hypertension may not feel symptoms, even though uncontrolled hypertension can increase the risk of serious health problems.
And research conducted in Lagos, Nigeria, found that many patients did not fully recognize the silent nature of hypertension.
Some patients reported stopping or pausing treatment when they felt healthy.
In other words:
“I feel better” can sometimes be mistaken for “my blood pressure is fine.”
❤️ BUT WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE REMAINS UNCONTROLLED?
The concern isn't simply the number on the BP machine.
Persistently high blood pressure can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of:
❤️ Heart disease and heart attack
🧠 Stroke
🫘 Kidney damage and kidney failure
