WHAT IS GENTAMICIN INJECTION 💉
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria.
KEY POINTS
Chemical formula: C₂₁H₄₃N₅O₇
Generic name: Gentamicin
Drug class: Aminoglycoside antibiotic
Route: IM (intramuscular) or IV (intravenous)
Common strengths: 10 mg/mL, 40 mg/mL, depending on the product.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria and interferes with protein synthesis, causing bacterial death.
INDICATION/ USES
- Severe urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Septicemia / bloodstream infections
- Severe respiratory tract infections, such as bacterial pneumonia
- Intra-abdominal infections, usually in combination with other antibiotics
- Bone and joint infections
- Skin and soft-tissue infections
- Endocarditis — usually used in combination with other antibiotics
- Serious neonatal infections, such as sepsis, under specialist supervision
- Pelvic infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
SIDE EFFECTS
- Kidney damage (nephrotoxicity) — reduced urine output, increased creatinine.
- Hearing damage (ototoxicity) — hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
- Balance problems — dizziness or difficulty maintaining balance.
- Pain or irritation at the injection site.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Skin rash or allergic reactions.
- Neuromuscular blockade — muscle weakness or difficulty breathing; rare but serious.
CONTRA-INDICATION
- Hypersensitivity to gentamicin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics.
- Previous serious allergic reaction to an aminoglycoside.
- Myasthenia gravis — gentamicin can worsen muscle weakness due to neuromuscular blockade.
- Severe renal impairment — not always an absolute contraindication, but requires extreme caution, dose adjustment, and close monitoring.
- Pre-existing hearing or vestibular problems — use only when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks because gentamicin can cause ototoxicity.
- Pregnancy — generally avoided unless clearly necessary because aminoglycosides can potentially cause fetal ototoxicity.
SUMMARY
Gentamicin injection is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially Gram-negative infections. It is given by IV or IM injection and works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Its major adverse effects are nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, so kidney function and dosing should be carefully monitored.
