Topic: Hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar)
Hypoglycemia is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal low blood sugar.
Glucose which is the body main source of energy during digestion, the body breaks down carbohydrate into various sugar molecules. One of these sugar molecules is Glucose.
Glucose is secreted into the bloodstream with the help of insulin secreted from the pancreas to pe*****te the cells. When the level of glucose in the blood rises, it signals the pancreas located behind the stomach to release insulin. In turn insulin unlocks the cell so that glucose can pe*****te to fuel the cell. Any excess glucose is stored in the liver and muscles in form of glycogen.
If you haven't eaten for hours, your blood sugar drops then an hormone from the pancreas called Glucagon signals the liver to break down glycogen to release glucose back into the blood stream.
The body can also manufacture its own glucose apart from these process, it is called *GLUCONEOGENESIS* . This process occurs primarily in the liver and in the kidney.
*SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HYPOGLYCEMIA*
The following are associated with the symptoms such as anxiety, sweating, nausea, tremor. Hypoglycemia also starve the brain of which glucose is essential for proper brain function. Lack of glucose to the brain can cause symptom ranging from severe headache, loss of consciousness, abnormal behavior, seizure, comma. Severe Hypoglycemia can lead to death.
*CAUSES OF HYPOGLYCEMIA*
Diabetes patient that takes insulin or other medication, it can lower the sugar level when it is taking in excess.
If after taking diabetes medication, you don't eat as much as usual thereby it causes you to loose more glucose in the body then it can lead to Hypoglycemia.
Other medications may cause hypoglycemia such as taking in (NSAID)especially in children which can cause kidney failure.
*NSAID*: Non steroid Anti-inflammatory drugs
High consumption of alcohol without eating much.
