A stroke at 34 years old.
He runs 5 km every weekend.
Normal blood pressure.
Not diabetic.
Doesnโt smoke.
Young. Fit. Working. Living his life.
Then one night, his own mouth could no longer form words.
His right arm went numb.
One side of his face dropped.
The room started spinning.
At 34.
His wife looked at the man she knew and suddenly couldnโt understand what he was trying to say.
That is how brutally a stroke can announce itself.
No warning letter.
No appointment.
No respect for your age.
She rushed him to the hospital.
And thank God she didnโt tell him to sleep and see how he would feel in the morning.
Because when it comes to stroke:
TIME IS BRAIN.
Every minute you waste can mean more brain tissue lost.
Doctors started investigating.
His blood pressure wasnโt uncontrolled.
He wasnโt diabetic.
He wasnโt a smoker.
Then imaging of the blood vessels revealed something important.
A cervical artery dissection.
An injury within the wall of one of the major arteries carrying blood through the neck toward the brain.
Then the doctors started asking questions.
Any accident?
No.
Any recent injury?
None he could remember.
Any trauma to the neck?
Then he mentioned something that sounded completely harmless.
He worked long hours sitting at a desk.
His neck frequently became stiff.
So whenever the tension became uncomfortable, he would massage his neck HARD.
Then crack it from side to side.
Sometimes several times a day.
That little habit suddenly mattered.
Because although cervical artery dissection is rare, forceful or abrupt manipulation of the neck has been associated with it.
This doesnโt mean everybody who cracks their neck will have a stroke.
It also doesnโt prove that neck cracking caused every dissection that happens after manipulation.
But repeated forceful manipulation was now a possible contributing trigger doctors had to consider.
And this is where things become frightening.
Your neck contains arteries supplying blood to your brain.
If a cervical artery dissection occurs, blood can collect within the layers of the arterial wall.
The artery may narrow.
A clot may form around the injured area.
Then one tiny piece of that clot can break away.
Travel upward.
Enter the brain.
Block an artery.
And suddenlyโฆ
A perfectly functioning part of your brain is starving for blood.
Your hand stops obeying you.
Your face drops.
You open your mouth to speakโฆ
But the words donโt come.
That is an ischemic stroke.
And donโt make the mistake of thinking:
โBut Iโm young.โ
Stroke doesnโt ask for your birth certificate.
Cervical artery dissection is an important cause of ischemic stroke in younger adults.
Other causes of stroke in young people include PFO, certain clotting disorders, cardiovascular conditions, some recreational drugs and other medical conditions.
Sometimes the first clue to cervical artery dissection can even be an unusual sudden headache or neck pain.
Then neurological symptoms may follow.
Know F.A.S.T.
FACE: One side suddenly droops.
ARM: Sudden weakness or numbness.
SPEECH: Speech suddenly becomes slurred, confused or difficult.
TIME: Get emergency medical help immediately.
Not tomorrow.
Not after prayers.
Not after herbs.
Not after rubbing their body with oil.
HOSPITAL.
And please stop treating your neck like youโre trying to open a stubborn bottle.
You donโt need to violently twist it until you hear CRACK.
Most neck cracking will never cause a stroke.
Cervical artery dissections are rare.
But your neck carries blood to the organ that contains everything you have ever known, loved, learned and remembered.
Your brain.
Treat it accordingly.
