Generation of free amino acids from hemoglobin in P. falciparum. Hemoglobin degradation involves initial cleavage by plasmepsins and falcipains into large fragments that are further digested into smaller peptides by falcilysin. The dipeptidyl aminopeptidase 1 (PfDPAP1) may release dipeptides from the N-termini of these oligopeptides. Some of the generated small peptides might be transported out of the DV into the parasite's cytosol by an unknown transporter. The cleavage into amino acids might occur in the DV by the acidic aminopeptidase P (PfAPP) and in the cytosol by the aminopeptidases PfM1AAP, PfM17LAP and PfM18AAP
