The Great Love for Scent in Islam
The significance of fragrance is beautifully captured in the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):
"From your worldly matters, women and perfume have been made dear to me, and the comfort of my eye is in prayer." (Sunan an-Nasa'i)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged the use of perfume, particularly for communal gatherings:
Before Jumu’ah (Friday) Prayer: It is a confirmed Sunnah to apply perfume and wear the best of one's clothes before attending the congregational prayer. The
After Ghusl (Ritual Bath): Scent enhances the state of ritual purity.
Receiving a Gift: The Prophet (peace be upon him) never used to refuse a gift of fragrance.
The Islamic Distinction: Fragrance for Men vs. Women
While fragrance is beloved for all, the Islamic tradition provides a distinct and profound etiquette for men and women when in public, rooted in the preservation of modesty (Hayā’) and preventing Fitnah (temptation).
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) drew a clear line regarding the best type of fragrance for each gender in public settings:
"The perfume for men is that whose scent is apparent and its colour is hidden, and the perfume for women is that whose colour is apparent, while its scent is hidden." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi – Sahih grade)
Specific Guidance for Women
Public Sphere: When going out, a woman must ensure her fragrance is so subtle that its scent does not reach non-Mahram (unrelated) men. Scholars prohibit strong, pervasive perfumes in public as it is a source of Fitnah.
Private Sphere: A woman is highly encouraged to adorn herself and use the finest, strongest fragrances for her husband inside the home. This is a crucial element of spousal affection and a highly rewarded act.
Specific Guidance for Men
Public Sphere: Men are encouraged to use distinct, noticeable scents (like Oud, Musk, and heavier oils) when attending the mosque, gatherings, or moving in public spaces.
