Cetearyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol, a blend of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol. Unlike volatile alcohols such as ethanol, fatty alcohols are waxy, conditioning ingredients used to improve the texture and performance of formulations.

What does it do?
• Thickens creams, lotions and conditioners
• Improves the consistency and body of emulsions
• Adds a smooth, creamy feel
• Provides emollience and conditioning
• Can support emulsion stability
• Helps give hair conditioners that rich, silky slip

Formulator’s tip:
Cetearyl alcohol is NOT the same as drying alcohols like ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. The word “alcohol” alone doesn’t tell you how an ingredient will behave.

Solubility: Insoluble in water; soluble/dispersible in oils and melted into the oil phase during formulation.

If you want the brightening benefits associated with kojic acid but need an ingredient that works better in an oil phase, Kojic Acid Dipalmitate (KAD) is one to know.

Kojic Acid Dipalmitate is a fat-soluble derivative of kojic acid. It is commonly used in formulations targeting uneven skin tone, dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Why formulators use it:
• Oil-soluble
• Generally more oxidation-stable than kojic acid
• Suitable for creams, lotions, serums and other anhydrous/oil-containing formulations
• Helps support a more even-looking skin tone

Unlike kojic acid, which is water-soluble, Kojic Acid Dipalmitate is oil-soluble.

It can be incorporated into the oil phase of emulsions and dissolved in suitable cosmetic oils/esters. It is not water-soluble, so simply adding it to the aqueous phase will not give you a properly solubilised formula.

BTMS 25, BTMS 50, and Behentrimonium Chloride.

They may all sound like they belong in the same family, but formulators, they are not the same thing.

BTMS 25 contains a lower level of active conditioning agent and is commonly used for lightweight conditioning products, creams, lotions, and haircare formulations where you want conditioning without too much heaviness.

BTMS 50 has a higher active content, making it a popular choice for richer conditioners, hair masks, leave in products, and formulations where stronger conditioning and more slip are desired.
