Fatty liver disease occurs when excess fat builds up in your liver. The two main types are metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly called NAFLD which is linked to obesity and diabetes, and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD).
It is largely a silent condition but can lead to severe inflammation, scarring, and liver failure.

Key Types and Causes
MASLD: The most common form, often associated with metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. It occurs independently of heavy alcohol use.

ALD: Caused by heavy, long-term alcohol consumption.SymptomsIn the early stages, fatty liver disease usually has no symptoms.

When symptoms do appear, they often include:
*Unexplained fatigue or tiredness
*Vague discomfort or mild pain in the upper right side of the abdomen

If the disease progresses to scarring (cirrhosis), more severe symptoms may develop, including itchy skin, fluid buildup in the abdomen, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
