Today we are going to be bringing to our knowledge the disease called scoliosis and we are here to give you the awareness that we take care of scoliosis in Inclusive Bone and Joint care.
SCOLIOSIS
Scoliosis Is a sideways and lateral curvature of the spine.
Scoliosis occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty and we have over 1 million people yearly in Nigeria according to statistics and many did not know it could be treated and that you can have long life span while having scoliosis.
In anatomical history we did not know what causes the most common type of scoliosis although it appears to involve hereditary factors, because the disorder sometimes runs in families, less common types of scoliosis may be caused by certain neuromuscular conditions, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.
In moderate to severe cases, scoliosis may be corrected through bracing or surgery if discovered.
We have 3 categories in which scoliosis is fixed, which they are 1. Idiopathic, 2. Congenital, and 3. Neuromuscular. But most common types of scoliosis are Idiopathic, which means that the cause is unknown or that there is no single factor that contributes to the development of the disease.
The curvature of the spine can stretch or irritate nerves. It can also strain joints, causing them to become inflamed. Scoliosis also affects your posture, which leads to muscles tightening or becoming tired, causing pain. In children, the spinal curve can increase without treatment
Also scoliosis feels like a stiffness and tightness in the lower back.” While more common in adults, stiffness and tightness of the lower back can be a common scoliosis-related symptom. As the body tries to adjust to the abnormal spinal curvature, muscles and ligaments can become stretched and strained from overuse.
Scoliosis is a progressive condition – it does tend to get worse as you age. However, scoliosis is somewhat unusual in that it does not have what we might call a “predictable trajectory, this is to say that you cannot simply assume that after some certain years, scoliosis will have increased by some degrees and If left untreated, scoliosis can worsen and have serious long-term physical and emotional complications, also severe scoliosis, whn the curvature exceeds 50° can cause the spine to rotate, which can lead to decreased lungs capacity and heart problems although the right treatment choice depends mainly on a person's age and the size of the curve. Mild cases of scoliosis may not really need treatment. But, moderate to severe scoliosis that is left untreated can lead to pain and increasing deformity.
In conclusion as stated above there are three proven ways to manage scoliosis observation, bracing, and surgery. We will recommend one of these methods based on the severity of the scoliosis and the child's physical maturity in regarding this 5 steps
1. pain medication such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
2 physical therapy to increase core muscle strength.
3 postural training.
4 weight maintenance.
5 activity modification.
