In many Nigerian homes, there is an unspoken expectation that a man should give his woman money even when she earns her own money, sometimes even when she earns more than he does.

But where does this expectation come from? Culture? Tradition? Society? Or the way we have been taught to define love and a man’s role in a relationship?

And when does “my man should take care of me” cross the line into financial dependence, entitlement or even transactional relationships?

We’re also seeing a worrying message being sold to young women: that dating a wealthy man is the ultimate goal, while money can be used to buy affection, access and even relationships.

So, where do we draw the line between a man providing for his woman and money becoming the foundation of the relationship?
