KWASUTH Commemorates 2026 World Pharmacists Day
*Promotes Safe, Rational Use of Medicines
The Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH) has joined pharmacists and healthcare institutions across the world to commemorate the 2026 World Pharmacists Day with a sensitisation programme aimed at promoting safe, effective and rational use of medicines.
The programme, organised by the Department of Pharmacy, was held on Friday, September 25, 2026, in line with this year’s theme, “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures.”
As part of activities marking the celebration, the Pharmacy team embarked on a sensitisation exercise across the hospital, educating patients, caregivers and members of the public on the importance of safe and rational medicine use, particularly during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The health education session also focused on the dangers associated with self-medication and the inappropriate use of medicines without proper professional guidance.
Participants were encouraged to always seek the advice of qualified healthcare professionals before taking medicines, especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
As part of the outreach, free medications were distributed to patients as a supportive health intervention, while members of the Pharmacy team reviewed patients’ medication information to identify medication-related problems and instances of inappropriate medicine use.
The activities underscored the important role of pharmacists in ensuring medication safety, improving treatment outcomes and strengthening the overall quality of healthcare delivery.
Earlier, the Head of the Department of Pharmacy, Pherman Ronke Esho, on behalf of the department, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Bola Ahmed Abdulkadir, where she presented him with an Award of Excellent Performance in recognition of his administrative efficiency, support for the Department of Pharmacy and commitment to advancing quality healthcare delivery at KWASUTH.
Receiving the award, the Chief Medical Director appreciated the Department of Pharmacy for the gesture and commended its members for their contributions to patient care and the hospital’s healthcare objectives.
Dr. Ahmed reiterated the hospital management’s commitment to supporting the vision of the present administration under the leadership of the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, in its efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and make quality and accessible healthcare available to the people of Kwara State.
He emphasised that the hospital would continue to promote teamwork among healthcare professionals, patient-centred care and initiatives that would improve health outcomes across the state.
The World Pharmacists Day programme was attended by members of the hospital management, healthcare professionals, staff, patients and members of the public.
The celebration further demonstrated KWASUTH’s commitment to supporting the government’s drive to provide efficient, safe, accessible and quality healthcare services to the people of Kwara State.
