What if nursing could take you somewhere you never expected?

For Pelumi Akinboade, that place was insurance.

His journey is a fascinating look at what can happen when a nurse takes their knowledge, experience, and skills beyond the traditional clinical path.

From the realities of bedside nursing to working in the insurance space, Pelumi’s story challenges the idea that there is only one way to build a career in nursing.

Because nurses are not limited to the bedside.

They can be in insurance.
They can be in business.
They can be in policy, research, technology, education, and so much more.

So, what could your nursing career look like beyond the bedside?

Meet Pelumi Akinboade, the insurance nurse expanding the possibilities of nursing.

What happens when the people closest to patients have no voice in the decisions that shape healthcare?

Nurses see the gaps. We understand what works, what doesn’t, and what patients actually experience.

Yet, too often, we’re left out of the conversations where important decisions are made.

Nursing cannot continue to be seen only as a profession that implements decisions.

We belong where those decisions are made.

And having a voice isn’t just about speaking, it’s about having the confidence, competence, and opportunities to influence healthcare beyond the bedside.

This is a conversation we need to have.

Nursing in Africa didn’t start with a nursing school…

Long before uniforms, nursing councils, textbooks, and hospital wards, African communities already had systems of care.

So how did we get from indigenous caregiving to the professional nursing practice we know today?

We explored the evolution of nursing in Africa, with a closer look at Nigeria: its roots, turning points, and the forces that shaped the profession.

Because understanding our history helps us better understand who we are as nurses today, and who we can become.

When people talk about nursing in Africa, the conversation usually turns to shortages, migration, and burnout.

That's real. But it's not the whole story.

Meet four nurses who are proof of what's possible in this profession, even under real strain:

🇬🇭 Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti — built Ghana's first postgraduate oncology nursing curriculum and won the $250,000 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, beating over 100,000 applicants from 199 countries.

🇰🇪 Khadija Mohamed Juma — turned personal loss into RedSplash, a blood-donation initiative that has run 500+ drives and helped save an estimated 75,000 lives in Kenya.

🇮🇪 Sherifat Ukachukwu — a Nigerian-born nurse educator in Ireland, recognized for building the next generation of healthcare leaders across borders.

🇳🇬 Solademi Idowu — implemented a postpartum haemorrhage protocol at Lagos Island Maternity Hospital that has resulted in zero PPH-related deaths since adoption.

None of them waited for perfect conditions. They saw a gap, built a response, and followed through.

Why Nurses are Leaving the Profession

Research shows nurses aren't just switching hospitals or jobs. Many are leaving the profession entirely, and the reasons are consistent across studies from Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa:

"If I ask this question, I will receive the embarrassment of my life."

That's the thought running through a young nurse's mind before they even open their mouth to ask for help.

A senior nurse breaks the silence on the toxic mentorship culture in our wards: the shouting, the public humiliation, the "discipline" that's really fear dressed up as training. It's costing us confident, curious nurses and replacing them with scared ones too afraid to ask questions and learn.

Let's make sure your painful training experience isn't someone else's initiation. Seniority should make you a better mentor, not a bigger threat.

Every year, an estimated 240,000 children are born with sickle cell disease across Africa, and without proper care, many won't live to see their fifth birthday.

Nearly 80% of the world's SCD births happen in Sub-Saharan Africa, yet awareness and access to care remain dangerously low.

In our latest article, we break down:

🩸 What sickle cell disease actually is
⚠️ Warning signs every nurse and parent should know

🩸 Blood transfusions save lives, but one missed timestamp on the chart can cost a nurse everything.

When a transfusion reaction happens, your documentation is the first thing anyone looks at. Did you catch the symptom early? Did you notify the physician on time? Did you chart it as it happened, or did you block chart and leave gaps a lawyer could walk through?

In our latest guide, we break down exactly what to document:

✅ Before you even hang the bag (consent, verification, baseline vitals)
✅ During the transfusion (vital sign timing that actually protects you)
✅ The moment a reaction starts (step-by-step response + sample charting)
✅ Delayed reactions that show up days later
✅ Why block charting is one of the riskiest habits in nursing notes

Real sample nursing notes included, the kind you can actually use as a reference on shift.

👩‍⚕️ Tag a nurse who needs to see this before their next transfusion shift.
