Following the recent hike in petrol prices due to the Middle East war, Civil Society Organizations and farmers have cautioned about the dire consequences on the economy and the Nigerian populace. The All Farmers Association of Nigeria's National President, Mohammed Magaji, requested that the Federal Government provide accessible and affordable fuel to farmers and Nigerians at a reasonable cost. He stressed that food production is contingent upon fuel availability. Magaji stated that without prompt action, farmers would face significant challenges, and food prices would escalate beyond Nigerians' purchasing power. He highlighted that the current energy crisis would inflate food production costs due to the use of petrol-powered engines for irrigation. Additionally, Magaji noted that transportation costs would increase, affecting commodity prices. He urged the government to maintain adequate petroleum supplies and regulate prices to ensure affordability. âGovernment should prioritize sufficient petroleum supply and implement interventions to keep prices affordable for the common man and farmers.â
