A va**nal yeast infection (vulvova**nal candidiasis) is usually caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a fungus that can normally live in the va**na without causing problems.

Common symptoms include:
• Intense va**nal itching
• Redness, irritation, or swelling
• Burning, especially when urinating
• Thick, white discharge, often described as cottage-cheese-like
• Usually little or no strong odor

Treatment
Treatment usually involves antifungal medication, such as:
Clotrimazole or miconazole va**nal preparations available in different short-course regimens.
Fluconazole 150 mg by mouth as a single dose is another option for uncomplicated cases in appropriate patients.

Important for pregnant women: Oral fluconazole should generally be avoided during pregnancy; CDC guidance recommends topical azole therapy for 7 days instead.

If symptoms persist after treatment, return within a short period, or keep recurring, the woman should be evaluated because the problem may not be a simple yeast infection or may involve a different type of Candida.

Remember: Itching and va**nal discharge do not automatically mean yeast infection. BV and sexually transmitted infections can cause similar symptoms, so proper diagnosis matters.
