Binta Muhammad receives coordinated medical attention for cardiac condition and additional health concerns

The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA), through its Rapid Response Team (RRT), has facilitated access to specialist medical care for Binta Muhammad, an elderly woman, following concerns arising from her existing cardiac condition.

The intervention was undertaken under the directive of the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, as part of the Agency’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable residents receive timely access to appropriate healthcare services.

Binta, who has a known cardiac condition and required specialist attention, was referred by the RRT to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital (MAWTH), Kano, for cardiology evaluation and further management.

As part of her subsequent medical assessment, an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound examination conducted at MAWTH on October 5, 2026 revealed large uterine masses and nodules, with the radiology report stating that the findings were presumptively consistent with uterine fibroids.

The additional finding underscores the importance of comprehensive medical evaluation and appropriate specialist follow-up, particularly for vulnerable patients with multiple health concerns.

The KSCHMA RRT continues to serve as a rapid intervention mechanism for identifying vulnerable cases, facilitating appropriate referrals and supporting patients in accessing care at facilities equipped to provide the required specialist services.

Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar has directed the team to sustain prompt response and effective coordination with healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care for patients requiring urgent or specialised medical attention.

The intervention reflects KSCHMA’s commitment to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare and supporting the broader healthcare objectives of the Kano First Agenda.

KSCHMA BEGINS FIVE-DAY Q3 INSPECTION, COMMUNITY DIALOGUE ACROSS 56 PHCs IN 22 LGAs

Three high-level teams commence field assessment to strengthen healthcare quality, accountability and community participation

The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA) has commenced a five-day Q3 Routine Inspection and Community Dialogue targeting 56 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across 22 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kano State.

The Day One field exercise focused on assessing service delivery, identifying operational gaps and engaging healthcare providers and communities to obtain first-hand feedback on the quality, accessibility and responsiveness of healthcare services.

The exercise is being conducted through three high-level teams led respectively by the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr Rahila Aliyu Muktar; the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf; and the Director-General, Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Prof. Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim.

On the first day, the teams visited Kiyawa and Abbas PHCs in Bagwai LGA; Kurna PHC in Dala; Kabuga PHC in Gwale; Badume and Dutsen Karya PHCs in Bichi; Kibiya, Saya Saya and Tarai PHCs in Kibiya LGA; as well as Rijiyar Lemo, Kwachiri and Fatima Ganduje PHCs in Fagge LGA.

At the facilities, the teams engaged healthcare workers, facility managers, community leaders and beneficiaries to review service availability, enrollee experiences, facility operations and challenges affecting effective healthcare delivery.

The community dialogue sessions provided residents with an opportunity to share their experiences, raise concerns and seek clarification on healthcare services, enrollee rights and entitlements. Feedback obtained during the engagements is being documented for appropriate follow-up.

The routine inspection forms part of KSCHMA’s quality-assurance and accountability efforts to strengthen collaboration between health-sector institutions, frontline providers and communities, while ensuring that identified service-delivery gaps receive appropriate attention.

The five-day exercise will continue across the selected facilities, with findings from the field assessment expected to support evidence-based follow-up actions, improve coordination and promote continuous improvement in primary healthcare delivery.

The exercise reinforces the commitment of the Kano State Government and its health-sector institutions to the Kano First Healthcare Agenda of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, with emphasis on accessible, quality, accountable and people-centred healthcare.

Dawanau and Akilu Memorial PHCs host Town Hall engagements on healthcare services, enrollee rights and BHCPF

The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), has continued its community-based Town Hall engagements with residents at Dawanau Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area and Akilu Memorial PHC in Madobi Local Government Area, alongside another participating PHC.

The engagements are aimed at strengthening community awareness, improving utilisation of primary healthcare services and creating platforms for meaningful dialogue between residents, healthcare providers and relevant stakeholders.

The sessions focused on Primary Healthcare and Social and Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (SRMNCH) services, as well as the rights and entitlements of healthcare enrollees and appropriate channels for reporting and resolving grievances.

Participants were also sensitised on the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) validation and enrolment exercise, including the basic minimum package of health services available to eligible beneficiaries.

The interactive community dialogue enabled residents to identify barriers affecting healthcare utilisation, including financial constraints, distance, cultural beliefs, gender considerations, perceived quality of care and misinformation. Community members were encouraged to propose practical solutions for improving healthcare uptake.

The engagement further promoted demand-generation strategies, including health talks, community mobilisation, outreach activities and male involvement, while encouraging residents to provide constructive feedback on healthcare services.

KSCHMA and CHAI also facilitated discussions towards developing immediate action points and strengthening collaboration between communities and healthcare providers.

The Agency reaffirmed its commitment to people-centred healthcare delivery, emphasising that informed and actively engaged communities are essential to improving access, accountability and utilisation of primary healthcare services.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA), Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, has felicitated with the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the people of Kano State on the occasion of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Dr. Rahila described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey, celebrate the resilience of its people and renew collective commitment towards building a healthier, more inclusive and prosperous nation.

She reaffirmed KSCHMA’s commitment to advancing the healthcare priorities of the Kano State Government under the Kano First Healthcare Agenda, particularly through expanded contributory healthcare coverage, financial protection and improved access to quality healthcare services.

The Executive Secretary highlighted significant milestones recorded by the Agency, including the expansion of enrolment under the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme, which reached 933,014 lives by the end of 2025, compared with 497,262 in 2023.

She said KSCHMA has continued to strengthen healthcare protection for vulnerable populations through programmes supporting pregnant women, children under five, persons living with disabilities, people living with chronic conditions, people living with HIV and inmates in correctional facilities, among others.

Dr. Rahila also highlighted the AbbaCare Programme for persons living with sickle cell disease, intensified community-based enrolment and sensitisation under the Lafiya Gida-Gida initiative, and the deployment of the KSCHMA Rapid Response Team (RRT) to provide timely intervention, support critical cases and facilitate appropriate referrals for beneficiaries requiring specialised care.

She said these interventions demonstrate the Agency’s commitment to ensuring that residents, particularly vulnerable beneficiaries, are not left without support when they require healthcare services.

According to her, KSCHMA has equally strengthened collaboration with healthcare providers, government institutions and development partners to improve service delivery, accountability and the sustainability of the contributory healthcare system.

Dr. Rahila said the progress recorded reflects the commitment of the Kano State Government to placing the wellbeing of citizens at the centre of its development agenda.

“As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, we celebrate the resilience and strength of our people and reaffirm our commitment to building a healthier Kano State. At KSCHMA, our focus remains on expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare, protecting vulnerable residents from financial hardship and ensuring that more people benefit from the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme.”

The Executive Secretary also urged the people of Kano State to embrace positive health-seeking behaviour by seeking medical attention promptly whenever they notice signs or symptoms of illness, attending routine health checks and making appropriate use of available healthcare services.

She particularly encouraged pregnant women, children, older persons and people living with chronic conditions to avoid delays in seeking professional medical care and to use accredited healthcare facilities for proper diagnosis, treatment and preventive services.

Dr. Rahila emphasised that early health-seeking, preventive care and regular health checks are essential to reducing avoidable complications and improving health outcomes, noting that the Agency’s Rapid Response Team complements these efforts by providing timely support and facilitating appropriate referrals in critical cases.

She congratulated Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the entire people of Kano State on the Independence Anniversary, while calling for continued unity, responsible citizenship and collective commitment towards strengthening healthcare and improving the wellbeing of citizens.

The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA) has sensitised members of the Local Health Authority and Administration Team (LHAAT) on the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme, with emphasis on community awareness, equity programmes and effective utilisation of healthcare services.

The engagement, held at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Nassarawa Hospital, Kano, was aimed at strengthening the capacity of LHAAT leaders to provide accurate information, promote community awareness and support increased utilisation of available healthcare services across Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The sensitisation focused on the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) and other state-funded vulnerable population programmes, as well as the KSCHMA benefit package, including primary and secondary healthcare services available to enrollees.

Declaring the programme open, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, said strong local health structures were essential to ensuring that communities understood their healthcare rights and could access available services.

She described LHAAT members as strategic partners in grassroots health communication and urged them to use the knowledge gained to strengthen community messaging, address misconceptions and encourage eligible residents to utilise healthcare services.

“Our local health structures are critical to the success of healthcare interventions. When communities understand the programmes, the services available and how to access them, our local teams become an important link between government and the people we serve,” she said.

The programme featured presentations on an overview of KSCHMA and its programmes, the Equity Programme, including BHCPF and other state-funded vulnerable programmes, and the KSCHMA benefit package.

Officials of the Programmes Department, including Yusuf Sani Fagge and Nazifi Musa Umar, facilitated the technical sessions, while Salisu Musa led the call-to-action session on key expectations for LHAAT.

Participants also engaged in interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions, focusing on strategies to improve community awareness, demand creation and healthcare service utilisation.

Agency facilitates timely referrals for cardiac, fracture and hernia cases under its rapid-response mechanism

The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA), through its Rapid Response Team (RRT), has facilitated timely access to specialist healthcare for four vulnerable patients requiring urgent medical attention.

The interventions were undertaken under the directive of the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, as part of the Agency’s efforts to strengthen rapid response, referral and access to appropriate healthcare services.

Among the patients attended to was Binta Muhammad, an elderly woman with a known cardiac condition, who required specialist evaluation. Following assessment, the RRT facilitated her referral to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital (MAWTH), Kano, to see a cardiologist for further evaluation and management.

Also referred to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital was a patient diagnosed with a hernia condition, for specialist assessment and appropriate management.

Meanwhile, the RRT responded to two patients who sustained fracture injuries, both of whom were referred to Sir Muhammad Sunusi Specialist Hospital (SMSH), Kano, for specialist orthopaedic care. One of the fracture cases required urgent surgical intervention and was promptly referred for the necessary procedure.

The coordinated interventions demonstrate the practical role of the KSCHMA RRT in identifying vulnerable cases, facilitating appropriate referrals and connecting patients with specialist healthcare services without unnecessary delays.

The interventions also reflect KSCHMA’s contribution to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare services within the broader healthcare objectives of the Kano First Agenda.

Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar has directed the RRT to sustain prompt response to cases requiring urgent medical attention and strengthen coordination with healthcare providers to support continuity of care.

The Kano State Contributory Health Care Management Agency (KSCHMA), in collaboration with the Sanitas Health and Development Foundation (SANHDEF), has engaged Chief Executives and representatives of the organised private sector on the implementation of the mandatory contributory healthcare scheme in Kano State.

The one-day engagement, held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, was designed to strengthen employers’ understanding of their statutory obligations to provide contributory healthcare coverage for their employees, while promoting dialogue on compliance, implementation challenges and practical timelines.

The meeting provided participants with information on the Kano State Contributory Health Scheme (KSCHS), including its benefit package, contribution structure and the legal framework governing participation by eligible employers and employees.

A key focus of the engagement was the Corporate Identification Number (CIN). Participants were informed about its purpose, issuance process and significance as the single instrument for establishing and verifying institutional compliance with the applicable healthcare requirements.

The engagement also created an open platform for employers to share concerns and provide feedback, particularly organisations currently providing healthcare coverage through Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) or other arrangements. Discussions addressed issues including cost, registration, compliance requirements and realistic timelines for implementation.

Speaking at the meeting, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, underscored the importance of sustained engagement and collaboration with the organised private sector to advance access to quality and sustainable healthcare coverage for workers across Kano State.

The meeting brought together relevant government institutions, private-sector organisations and other stakeholders, providing a multi-sector platform for clarifying regulatory requirements and strengthening cooperation towards effective implementation of the scheme.

The engagement concluded with deliberations on next steps and an implementation roadmap, including the registration of interested employees, issuance of the CIN and establishment of direct communication channels between KSCHMA and participating organisations.
