KIRCT was honoured to welcome Professor Sarki Abba Abdulkadir, a globally acclaimed Nigerian-born medical scientist, cancer researcher, and Professor of Urology and Pathology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, USA.

During his visit, Professor Abdulkadir toured KIRCT’s research laboratories, engaging with researchers and gaining insights into the Institute’s ongoing work in cancer research, biomedical science, and related areas.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange and highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration, mentorship, and partnerships in advancing cancer research and improving health outcomes.

KIRCT appreciates Professor Abdulkadir for his visit and looks forward to opportunities for continued engagement and scientific collaboration.

Ready to take your bioinformatics skills to the next level?

The Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT) is pleased to announce an intensive 2-week Advanced Bioinformatics Training, designed for researchers and professionals looking to strengthen their practical skills in genomics and bioinformatics.

🔬 Choose from two specialised tracks:
🦠 Track A: Microbiology & Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
🧬 Track B: Human Genomics

Participants will gain hands-on skills in sequencing analysis, genome assembly, variant analysis, AMR gene detection, phylogeny, data visualisation, and more.

💰 Training Fee: ₦200,000
👥 Limited to 30 participants per batch

🧬 HIDDEN MICROBE REVEALED: KIRCT UNCOVERS A RARE BACTERIUM CARRYING A CLINICALLY IMPORTANT AMR GENE
One isolate. Three identities. One genomic answer.
🔬 Routine testing: Klebsiella spp.
🧪 BD Phoenix M50: Citrobacter spp.
🧬 Whole-genome sequencing: Phytobacter diazotrophicus KIRCT-001.
But the discovery went further.
The genome carried blaCTX-M-27, alongside blaTEM-1 and blaLAP-2.
The isolate was resistant to ceftriaxone, cefepime and cefixime, but remained susceptible to carbapenems.
🔎 Among 18 publicly available P. diazotrophicus genomes analyzed, blaCTX-M-27 was not detected.
An ISEcp1-like element was also found adjacent to the resistance gene.
This is a reminder that AMR can hide beyond the patient in hospital sinks, drains and other environmental niches.

The Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT) is excited to announce applications for its Applied Molecular Diagnostics Workshop—a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on laboratory experience from experts in the field.
