HAIR LOSS AND BREAST CANCER AMONG BLACK FEMALES:as told by HOPE.

Hair loss related to chemotherapy for breast cancer can compound distress around a breast cancer diagnosis. Black females may find that cooling caps and other hair loss coping strategies are less effective than for people with non-textured Chemotherapy can have a number of undesirable side effects, including a type of hair loss (alopecia) called chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). While CIA can affect anyone, its severity and how well traditional coping methods work can vary based on a person’s race or ethnicity.

A 2023 commentary article citing an earlier study indicates that African American females may be at a higher risk for widespread, permanent alopecia when receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. In addition to more severe hair loss, a 2022 literature review notes that hair preservation treatments among African American females may be less effective. Hair texture and scalp conditions may contribute to this disparity, but more research is needed.

Treatment resistance is just one challenge Black females with CIA face. The 2023 literature review also points out that cranial prostheses (custom-made, prescription hairpieces and wigs) for people with breast cancer aren’t as readily available to match textured hairstyles.

It was a Miracle at Alex Ekwueme federal Teaching Hospital

There was jubilation today at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. The atmosphere shifted from routine hospital work to rapturous thanksgiving as news spread through the wards.

The cause of the celebration was a New Month gift to the family of Dr. Chijioke Ogeh, Consultant Pediatrician and Deputy CMAC of the hospital. After 16 long years of waiting in marriage, God blessed the couple with five children at once.

The babies are quintuplets: four boys and one girl. Medical staff and patients described the delivery as extraordinary. Many called it nothing short of divine.

The Chief Medical Advisory Committee, CMAC, of the hospital described the birth of the quintuplets as a record breaker for the facility. He said it was the first time in the hospital’s history that a set of five babies was delivered successfully.

A grateful Dr. Ogeh stood before colleagues, tears in his eyes, to give thanks to God. He told everyone present that God keeps His word and His timing is perfect. He urged other couples waiting on God to remain steadfast in faith.

Psalm 127:3 came alive in that moment: “Children are a heritage from Jehovah (Lord), offspring a reward from Him.” What looked impossible for 16 years became a testimony in one delivery room.
