Ever heard your doctor say “OHSS” and wondered what they were talking about?
OHSS = Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome.

It can happen when the ovaries respond too strongly to fertility medications used to stimulate egg development, particularly during some IVF treatments.

Think of it this way: the medication is meant to encourage the ovaries to produce eggs. But sometimes, the ovaries can over-respond, becoming enlarged and causing fluid to move into the abdomen.

Some people may experience:

Myth 1: IVF is only for women with fertility challenges.
❌ False. Fertility challenges can involve the woman, the man, or both partners. IVF and other treatments are recommended based on an individual medical assessment.

Myth 2: IVF always works on the first attempt.
❌ False. IVF success varies based on factors such as age, the cause of infertility and individual medical circumstances.

Myth 3: IVF babies are “not normal” or unhealthy.
❌ False. IVF is a well-established medical procedure, and most babies born through IVF are healthy.

Think of a baby's lungs like tiny balloons.

For those little balloons to stay open and fill with air properly, the lungs need a special substance called surfactant.

Sometimes, especially when a baby is born too early, the lungs haven't made enough surfactant yet. The tiny air sacs can struggle to stay open, making it difficult for the baby to breathe. This is called Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS).

What might you notice?

A baby with RDS may breathe very quickly, make grunting sounds, flare their nostrils, or have the skin around the ribs pull in while breathing. In severe cases, the baby may develop a bluish colour because of low oxygen.

For a parent, seeing your newborn struggle to breathe can be frightening. But this is exactly why specialized newborn care and close monitoring matter.
