It’s heartbreaking that one of the most preventable and highly treatable cancers still claims thousands of lives in Nigeria every year.

Cervical cancer can largely be prevented — and the HPV vaccine is one of our most effective tools.

The vaccine is currently being rolled out for girls aged 9–14 years across primary health centres in Nigeria.

Vaccination within this age range provides strong protection against the types of HPV that cause most cervical cancer cases later in life.

If you are a parent or caregiver with a child in this age range, visit your nearest health centre to access the vaccine.

This World Cancer Day, we reflect on the reality: 72,000 Nigerians still lose their lives because f late detection and lack of optimal care

But there is hope.

Global evidence shows that up to one-third of cancers are preventable and many more are curable when detected early.

For some cancers, like cervical cancer, elimination is possible through coordinated action: vaccination, screening, early treatment, and stronger health systems.

The fight against cancer will not be won by a single intervention or a single voice.

It will be won by people-centred policies, strong primary healthcare, sustained advocacy, and collective action.

Together, Nigeria can win this fight against cancer and build a nation free from premature deaths caused by this disease.

Free cancer screening is available — and cost should not be the reason anyone misses it.

In commemoration of World Cancer Day 2026, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, is offering FREE screening for breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.

Do you know that Nigeria has a national guideline for cervical cancer screening developed to reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality among Nigerian women?

In honour of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, we are spotlighting the evidence-based framework guiding how screening should be done in Nigeria—who should be screened, when, how, and what care should follow.

The guideline standardises screening protocols, defines target populations (including women living with HIV), outlines feasible screening methods and intervals, and provides clear pathways for triage, treatment, referral, and quality assurance across the health system.
