Parkinson’s disease does not begin the day a diagnosis is made. For many people, it starts years earlier — quietly, gradually, and often unnoticed.

In Nigeria, too many people living with Parkinson’s disease experience long delays before receiving the right diagnosis and care. By then, symptoms may have already progressed significantly.

But early diagnosis can change everything.
It can improve treatment outcomes, preserve mobility, support mental well-being, empower caregivers, and reduce preventable complications.

Awareness is the first step.
Knowing the signs early could help someone you love access the care and support they need sooner.

If you notice persistent symptoms, do not ignore them. Speak to a doctor early and seek support.

At ADPF, we remain committed to improving awareness, access to care, and support for people living with Parkinson’s disease across Nigeria.

A key part of our events and programs at the Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson’s Foundation (ADPF) is ensuring that our attendees leave much better than they came in relation to their understanding of Parkinson’s Disease and how their empathy for persons living with Parkinson’s in their environment.

We find that many times there are questions that need to be asked, myths that need to be debunked and fears that need to be allayed and that’s a big part of why we do what we do.

If you have any questions about Parkinson’s Disease, do not hesitate to send us a DM, we don’t think there’s a “silly question” because we want a Nigeria where every person has an accurate understanding of Parkinson’s disease.

Today, we remember a life that continues to give.

Dr. Adewunmi Desalu was more than a brilliant mind. He was a man of strength, faith, and deep compassion. Even in the face of Parkinson’s disease, he chose courage. He chose purpose. He chose to keep going.

His story did not end, it became a movement.

Through the Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson’s Foundation, his legacy lives on in every life touched, every family supported, and every person reminded that they do not have to walk this journey alone.

Today, we honour him; and always, we carry his legacy forward.

This Workers’ Day, we celebrate those who are building stronger systems of care, supporting families, and standing beside people living with Parkinson’s disease every single day. Progress happens because of you!

Let’s keep pushing for better care, better awareness, and better lives. Have a wonderful month of May!🌸

Parkinson’s doesn’t affect men alone, and women’s experiences are too often overlooked. This is a big part of why our Parkinson's documentary featured two women living with Parkinson's disease.

Women living with Parkinson’s are:
• More likely to be diagnosed late
• More likely to experience non-motor symptoms like depression and fatigue
• Affected by hormonal changes that influence symptoms
• More often caregivers before they are seen as patients

In Nigeria, limited access to care adds another layer of invisibility.

This Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we’re saying it clearly:
Women with Parkinson’s deserve to be seen, heard, and properly cared for.

If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Ask questions. Seek help. You deserve answers.

Nigeria is ageing, but our health system isn’t ready for Parkinson’s disease.

For many older Nigerians, living with Parkinson’s means:
• Little to no access to specialists
• High cost of care
• Delayed or missed diagnosis
• Social isolation and stigma
• Heavy caregiver burden

This is the reality. But it doesn’t have to be the future

This Parkinson's awareness month, we are pushing for:
✔️ Integration of Parkinson’s care into primary healthcare
✔️ Stronger social protection systems
✔️ Community awareness that leads to early action

Parkinson’s awareness is not just about information, it’s about building systems that work for people because growing older should not mean facing Parkinson’s alone.

To every caregiver who shows up every single day — this one is for you!💜💚

Caring for someone with Parkinson's disease is one of the most demanding and most loving things a person can do. It asks everything of you: your time, your patience, your emotional strength, and your presence. And yet so many caregivers do it quietly, without recognition, without support, and without being told that what they are doing matters. It matters deeply.

Here are 9 simple, practical ways to provide better support for someone living with Parkinson's disease. From leading with empathy to remembering to take care of yourself too. Because you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Save this image and share it with a caregiver you know. And if you are a caregiver reading this: we see you, we honour you, and we are here for you.

Did you know that Parkinson's Disease is more than just a tremor?🧠

Parkinson's Disease is a condition that affects the brain and how it communicates with the body. It happens when the brain stops producing enough dopamine — the natural chemical that helps your muscles move smoothly and easily.

The symptoms can show up in ways many people would never expect:
🫥 A frozen or expressionless face
🤲 Tremors at rest and during movement
🧍 Stooped posture and loss of balance
🧠 Difficulty focusing and multitasking
😔 Mood changes including anxiety and depression
✍️ Small, cramped handwriting
😴 Disrupted sleep

The good news? There is currently no cure, but Parkinson's disease can be managed effectively — and many people have lived decades with a Parkinson's diagnosis.

This World Parkinson's Month, we are committed to making sure every Nigerian knows what Parkinson's looks like, because awareness saves lives!💚

Know someone who may be showing these signs? Encourage them to seek medical advice early.

The 4th Annual Parkinson’s Disease Symposium was more than an event. It was a powerful step forward for Parkinson’s care in Nigeria and across Africa.

From meaningful conversations to shared experiences and bold ideas, we brought together a community committed to doing more.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and stood with us.

This is how change begins.

The 4th Annual Parkinson’s Disease Symposium is over, and it was everything we hoped it would be. The conversations were honest, the recommendations were bold, and the energy in the room was unlike anything we have experienced at a previous edition.

Whether you attended in person, joined us virtually, shared our posts, forwarded our emails, encouraged someone to register, or simply held this event in your thoughts on the day — you were part of it. The Parkinson’s community in Nigeria is not built by one organisation. It is built by every person who chooses, again and again, to show up for it. You are one of those people, and we are grateful.

We cannot wait to see you again on Saturday, July 25th, 2026 for 2026! Be sure to save the date!

11/04/2026

It’s D-day and we can’t wait to have you.
