When last did you eat carrots?
Many people don’t know how nutritious carrots are, and how much they stand to gain from regularly consuming them.
In this post, you will see five reasons why you should add carrots to your meals and eat them frequently.
1. Carrots are good for your eyes
Carrots contain a substance called ‘beta-carotene,’ which your body converts to vitamin A.
Over time, with constant ingestion of vitamin A in your body, you will begin to notice an improvement in your eye health, especially night vision.
Being deficient in Vitamin A can lead to:
• Night blindness
• Dry eyes (Xerophthalmia)
• Conjunctival xerosis
• Corneal xerosis
• Corneal ulcers
• Corneal softening (keratomalacia)
• Blindness
• Retinopathy, etc.
Carrots can help you to prevent the above, as you incorporate them in your diet.
2. Carrots are good for your skin
One will think they need to eat carrots in large quantity to get a good skin glow, but that’s not true. As with many other nutritious foods, steady intake does it.
Vitamin A which you get from the metabolism of beta carotene, helps to serve as a shield for your skin.
Carrots also have antioxidants that help you to get rid of free radicals which could damage your skin.
Vitamin A also helps to keep your skin strong and healthy over time, after promoting tissue repair.
3. Carrots are good for your heart
If you want to keep your heart healthy, you should look to eat foods that are rich in fiber – one of such is carrots.
The fiber in carrots has been known to reduce LDL cholesterol, often called “bad cholesterol,” which, if not controlled could block the arteries that supply blood to your heart. Carrots in this way help to lower your risk of developing heart disease.
If you are hypertensive, carrots can also be helpful for you:
• Some studies have hinted that carrots contain nitrates, which are converted in the body to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps to relax your blood vessels and ultimately reduces your blood pressure.
• Beta carotene, found in carrots also helps to support better blood pressure regulation.
• Carrots are also rich in potassium, which helps you to get rid of excess sodium through your urine, eventually relaxing the walls of your blood vessels, lowering your blood pressure.
Carrots are also good for your weight loss journey because they have low calories and high fibre. So, you get full because of the high-fibre content, without having to overeat. This reduces the risk of obesity and keeps you generally healthy.
The fiber also helps to prevent indigestion.
Could it be that you’ve been missing out on nature’s goodness by ignoring carrots?
Fun fact:
Do you know that lightly cooking carrots could improve your body’s ability to absorb beta carotene? So, whether you eat it raw or you cook it, you are in for a healthy treat.
Just curious:
