When you’re pregnant, washing fruit isn’t just a quick rinse — it’s one of the easiest ways to protect both you and your baby.
Why it matters more during pregnancy
Your immune system is naturally a bit lower when you’re pregnant. That means bacteria and parasites that might just upset someone else’s stomach could hit you harder. Two things we care about most:

1. Listeria – A bacteria that can live on the skin of melons, cucumbers, and other produce. Rare, but serious in pregnancy.

2. Toxoplasma – A parasite from soil that sometimes sticks to unwashed fruits and veggies.
Both can cross the placenta. The good news: a proper wash takes care of them.
How to wash fruit the safe way
Step 1: Clean hands + clean space
Wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds. Make sure your sink, cutting board, and knife are clean too. Cross-contamination is sneaky.

Step 2: Rinse under running water
No need for soap, vinegar, or special sprays. Cool running water and a little friction is what the CDC and doctors recommend.

Step 3: Scrub firm fruits
For apples, cucumbers, oranges, mangoes, watermelon — anything with a firm skin — use a clean vegetable brush. Even if you peel it later, scrub it first. When you cut through an unwashed melon, the knife can drag bacteria from the rind into the flesh.

Step 4: Handle delicate fruits gently
Berries, grapes, tomatoes: put them in a colander and rinse while gently swishing with your hands. Pat dry with a clean towel.

Step 5: Dry them
Bacteria love moisture. Dry with a clean cloth or paper towel before cutting or storing.
