Umbilical cord infection (omphalitis): Redness, swelling, warmth, pus, foul smell, and pain around the cord stump.
Neonatal tetanus: Cow dung may contain bacteria that cause tetanus, a life-threatening condition characterized by muscle stiffness, spasms, difficulty feeding, and breathing problems.
Sepsis (blood infection): Bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the umbilical stump and spread throughout the body, causing severe illness.
Delayed cord healing: Contamination can interfere with the natural drying and separation of the cord.
Abscess formation: Localized collections of pus may develop around the umbilical area.
Death: Severe infections in newborns can become fatal if not treated promptly.
