Many herbal preparations contain plant-based compounds called phytoestrogens.
They mimic estrogen in your body and bind to the same receptors your natural hormones use. When you take them alongside hormonal birth control, they compete for those same receptors.
The result? Your birth control becomes less effective, or stops working entirely.
Some herbs — like d**g quai, black cohosh, and wild yam — have estrogen-like effects that can disrupt your cycle, cause irregular bleeding, or interfere with ovulation timing.
’re not harmless because they’re “natural.” Poison is natural too!
If you’re using hormonal birth control, any herbal supplement that affects hormones can reduce its effectiveness. This includes herbal contraceptive rings, fertility teas, and “natural cycle balancing” supplements.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
Your body doesn’t care whether the hormone came from a lab or a leaf. A receptor doesn’t know the difference.
