From 0 cm To 10 cm: What Your Cervix Is Really Doing

Labour is not just about pain—your cervix is doing powerful, silent work to bring your baby out. Here’s what’s really happening at each stage:

1. 0–2 cm (Early phase)
Your cervix is still firm and closed, slowly beginning to soften and open. Contractions may feel mild or irregular.

2. 3–4 cm (Latent labour)
The cervix starts opening more steadily. This is when many women begin to feel “this is real.”

3. 5–6 cm (Active labour begins)
Things get more intense. Your cervix is opening faster, and contractions are stronger and closer together.

4. 7–8 cm (Transition phase)
This is the toughest part. The cervix is stretching quickly, and emotions can feel overwhelming.

5. 9–10 cm (Fully dilated)
Your cervix is completely open—ready for baby to pass through. You may feel strong pressure and the urge to push.

Your cervix doesn’t just “open”—it softens, thins, and stretches to make way for your baby. Every contraction is working with your body, not against it.

Trust the process—your body knows what to do.
