The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved the absorption of casual workers at the State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, into the Ondo State Civil Service, a move aimed at rewarding their dedication and strengthening healthcare service delivery in the state.

Speaking during a meeting with the newly absorbed staff, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, Dr. Adeola Oladele Akintade, expressed profound appreciation to the governor for the gesture. He described the decision as another demonstration of the administration's commitment to improving the welfare of health workers and enhancing healthcare delivery across the state.

Dr. Akintade also commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for other worker-friendly policies, including the recent salary increment, new ambulance and medical equipment acquisition,noting that such initiatives have continued to boost staff morale in the health sector.

The CMD equally appreciated the Acting Chairman of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Olufemi Akeredolu, for his support in making the absorption of the workers possible.

While congratulating the newly absorbed staff, Dr. Akintade urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them through dedication, discipline and commitment to duty.

FRSC Partners State Specialist Hospital Ondo for Free Medical Outreach to Commercial Drivers in Ondo

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has partnered with the State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, to provide free medical services to commercial drivers as part of efforts to promote road safety through improved healthcare.

The medical outreach, held at a commercial motor park in Ondo, began with a road safety and health lecture delivered by the Assistant Corps Commander(FRSC), Joseph Kehinde Ajayi, who said the initiative was designed to improve the health of drivers and strengthen the relationship between the Corps and the public.

Speaking at the event, Ajayi said the FRSC’s responsibility goes beyond traffic control, rescue operations and law enforcement, stressing that the Corps also has a duty to safeguard the wellbeing of road users.

“As public servants, we believe there is a need to give back to society. Our services go beyond controlling traffic, removing obstructions and carrying out rescue operations. We also consider it important to care for the health of road users, especially drivers,” he said.

He explained that the idea for the outreach was conceived after he met with the Chief Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Adeola O. Akintade, who immediately agreed to support the initiative by providing medical personnel and materials.

Ajayi said commercial drivers were chosen because they transport large numbers of passengers daily, making their health a critical factor in ensuring road safety.

He explained that a commercial driver who is not in good health can endanger many lives. If a driver develops a medical emergency while behind the wheel, it could lead to serious crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.

According to him, stakeholder collaboration is one of the FRSC’s corporate strategic goals for 2026, adding that the partnership with the State Specialist Hospital demonstrates the Corps’ commitment to building stronger relationships with the public.

He expressed optimism that the initiative would change public perception of the FRSC.

He added that he wants people to not only see them as officers who enforce traffic laws but as partners who genuinely care about their wellbeing.

Ajayi encouraged drivers to make regular medical check-ups a habit and advised those diagnosed with any health condition during the screening to seek proper medical care instead of relying solely on the outreach.

He also announced that the programme would become a quarterly exercise to ensure continuous health monitoring for commercial drivers.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital Ondo, Dr. Adeola O. Akintade, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to supporting the FRSC’s efforts to improve the health of road users through preventive healthcare. He said the hospital would continue to provide medical personnel and other necessary support to sustain the outreach and ensure more drivers have access to quality healthcare services.

The Matron in charge of the programme, Matron Akinlara Oluwaseyi, also addressed the drivers on the importance of healthy living. She urged them to undergo routine medical check-ups, monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar regularly, eat healthy meals, get adequate rest and seek prompt medical attention whenever they experience any health challenges.

The outreach featured free medical consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, health counselling and other medical services for commercial drivers as part of the joint effort by the FRSC and the State Specialist Hospital to promote healthier drivers and safer roads.

State Specialist Hospital Ondo Extends Healthcare Services to Ondo Correctional Centre Inmates

As part of the Ondo State Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of correctional centre inmates, the State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, has conducted a comprehensive medical outreach at the Ondo Correctional Centre, providing essential healthcare services and reinforcing the importance of preventive medicine.

The initiative aligns with the vision of the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, and reflects the growing role of state governments in correctional healthcare following the constitutional amendment that moved correctional services from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List.

The hospital’s delegation, led by Dr. Akeke, Matron Grace Adeoye and Matron Akinlara, was received by the Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), Mr. Odeniran Samuel, alongside other senior officials of the correctional facility.

Speaking on the programme, the Chief Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, Dr. Adeola O. Akintade described the outreach as a proactive intervention designed to prevent illnesses from becoming severe before inmates require specialist care.

According to him, many inmates present with preventable health conditions, including skin infections, malnutrition, respiratory tract infections and chronic diseases such as tuberculosis. He also observed that healthcare personnel within correctional facilities remain overstretched, making it difficult to adequately meet the growing healthcare demands.

He explained that the hospital introduced the outreach to bridge these gaps through regular medical screenings, laboratory investigations and early diagnosis of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

“When abnormalities are detected during our screenings, we work closely with the correctional authorities to ensure affected inmates are referred to the hospital for proper treatment before complications arise. Those whose conditions can be managed within the correctional centre receive immediate care, while more complex cases are referred for specialist attention.

He further stated that this is not a one-off programme. It is designed to be a continuous, periodic outreach through which the medical team will regularly visit correctional centres to screen inmates, provide treatment where possible and strengthen partnership with correctional authorities in safeguarding the health of inmates.

The outreach also included free medical consultations, routine health screenings, laboratory investigations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, as well as the distribution of essential medications. The exercise formed part of the hospital’s broader strategy of taking quality healthcare services directly to underserved populations while strengthening collaboration between healthcare institutions and correctional facilities, stating that this is the third visit to the facility.

Activities commenced with a health education session delivered by Matron Akinlara, who emphasized the importance of disease prevention, personal hygiene, early diagnosis and prompt treatment of common health conditions. She encouraged inmates to adopt healthy practices that could help reduce the spread of infectious diseases and improve their overall well-being.

Speaking during the programme, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Mr. Odeniran Samuel, explained that the correctional centre has qualified healthcare professionals employed by the Nigerian Correctional Service and certified by the Nigerian Medical Association, who provide medical care for inmates.

He, however, noted that the increasing inmate population has placed significant pressure on available healthcare resources, particularly the supply of medications. According to him, support from the Government, philanthropists and other development partners has continued to provide relief despite the existing challenges.

Mr. Odeniran added that efforts are ongoing to further improve healthcare delivery within correctional facilities through increased government support.

He said, the facility is working closely with the government to secure additional medical equipment, adequate drugs and more qualified healthcare personnel.

The medical outreach underscores the importance of collaboration between government institutions in expanding access to healthcare for vulnerable populations and advancing public health across Ondo State.

Road Safety Corps Pays Familiarization Visit to State Specialist Hospital, Ondo

The leadership of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, led by the Assistant Corps Commander, Joseph Ajayi, paid a familiarization visit to the Chief Medical Director of State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, Dr. Adeola Akintade.

Speaking during the visit, Assistant Corps Commander Ajayi explained that the purpose of the visit was to officially introduce himself following his recent deployment to Ondo town and to strengthen the existing relationship between the FRSC and the hospital.

He further disclosed that the Command is planning a free medical outreach programme across the town and expressed the need for volunteer medical personnel from the hospital to support the initiative. He also emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration between the FRSC and the State Specialist Hospital in promoting public health and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.

In his response, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Adeola Akintade, warmly welcomed the FRSC delegation and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to partnering with the Corps in initiatives that benefit society.

Dr. Akintade recalled previous engagements with the FRSC on improving the management of road traffic accident victims brought to the hospital. He stressed the importance of FRSC personnel remaining at the hospital for a reasonable period after bringing accident victims to the Accident and Emergency Unit, noting that their presence could provide valuable information to medical personnel and facilitate prompt and effective emergency care.

The CMD also pledged the hospital’s continued support by providing medical volunteers for future FRSC health campaigns and other collaborative programmes aimed at improving community health and safety.

Police, Hospital Management Strengthen Security Ties in Ondo

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Fagun Division, Ondo Town, SP Oginni Cornelius, has paid a familiarisation visit to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Akintade Adeola, as part of efforts to strengthen security collaboration within the healthcare facility.

The visit, which took place at the hospital premises in Ondo Town, brought together key officers from the police division and members of the hospital’s management team. The engagement focused on assessing the existing security framework of the hospital and identifying areas for improvement.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Adeola expressed appreciation for the proactive step taken by the police leadership, noting that hospitals require a secure environment to effectively deliver critical healthcare services. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding patients, staff, and hospital property, especially in a busy public health institution.

In his remarks, Mr. Oginni stated that the visit was aimed at fostering a stronger working relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and the hospital management. He emphasized the need for regular collaboration, intelligence sharing, and improved response mechanisms to address security concerns within and around the hospital.

APIN Public Health Initiative Implementing Partners Visit State Specialist Hospital, Ondo

The APIN Public Health Initiative implementing partners in Ondo State paid a courtesy visit to the management of the State Specialist Hospital (SSH), Ondo, as part of efforts to strengthen the integration of service delivery for patients living with HIV into the general health system.

Speaking during the visit, the Team Leader and Head of APIN Public Health Initiative in Ondo State, Pharm. Olubusola Ojo, explained that prior to the partial withdrawal of funding by the United States Government, APIN—an agency responsible for the treatment, care, and sensitization of people living with HIV—had commenced the integration of health care provision for people living HIV into routine healthcare delivery across the state.

She noted that State Specialist Hospital, Ondo, currently falls under the category of facilities with partial integration and emphasized the need for improvement. According to her, integrated service delivery would ensure that patients living with HIV access care in a less stigmatized environment, see doctors alongside other patients, register using the same hospital system, receive drugs at the main pharmacy, and experience improved retention and tracking.

Also speaking, Mr. Ogunsuyi,a representative of the Ondo State AIDS Control Agency (ODSACA), commended the hospital management for its dedication since the inception of the program. He stressed that hospital cards and patient numbers for people living with HIV should be the same as those issued to all other patients. He added that while the ad-hoc staff are performing commendably, the government should employ more personnel and absorb qualified ad-hoc workers to enhance service delivery.

In his response, the Head of APIN at State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Modupe, appreciated the impact of APIN in the hospital, highlighting the hospital’s support in providing utilities such as electricity and generator services during clinic days. He disclosed that the hospital would commence dispensing HIV drugs at the main pharmacy and reaffirmed that all patients attending the hospital are issued hospital cards and numbers. He, however, noted the challenge of limited space for storing patient cards and recommended the adoption of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system for seamless service delivery.

The Chief Medical Director, Dr. Adeola Akintade, stated that the hospital has a Quality Improvement Committee in place to ensure effective, efficient, and equitable healthcare services. He further revealed that the Ondo State Government has introduced i-ONDO, which has already commenced in revenue services and will soon be extended to healthcare. He assured the team that staff orientation would begin shortly and that the integration of services would be gradually implemented.
