The Year Was 2017

I still remember the look on her face like it was yesterday.

She had been asked to help her husband to the toilet and collect his urine for a test. But no matter what they tried, he couldn’t produce a single drop.

If you’re not familiar, the test she was trying to help with is called a culture test. It’s a way of growing microorganisms—like bacteria, viruses, or fungi—from a sample to find out if there’s an infection.

In this case, we needed to check if her husband had a urinary tract infection caused by his prostate condition.

By the time I saw her, she was completely drained—physically and emotionally.

As I walked toward the ward in my white lab coat, she rushed to me like I was the answer to all her prayers.

With desperation in her eyes, she asked me:
"Nurse (medical professionals are either addressed as nurse or doctor in Nigeria), can you use a syringe to collect his urine? Maybe just puncture his bladder and get it out?"

But her question wasn’t funny—it was heartbreaking. She wasn’t trying to be reckless. She was just desperate.

I didn’t judge her. I just explained things as gently as I could.

Her husband’s inability to urinate that entire day was due to his prostate problem—a condition that, if caught early, could have been managed.

This experience has stuck with me because I see this far too often:
Men ignoring their prostate health until it becomes a crisis.

How did your last visit to the toilet go?

You let out urine with no hassles, I guess.

Some men struggle to let it out.

Most men who urinate without

Discomfort
Feeling like you haven't urinated everything
Urge to urinate again the next second, and take this little act for granted until prostate issues make it a daily battle.

Why?

The closeness of the prostate gland to your urinary tract (I explained this in this post. https://www.facebook.com/share/18DMTMUKDt/; please check it out).

When the prostate gland becomes enlarged or inflamed, it presses on the urethra, narrowing the pipe that lets urine out.

This leads to:

Frequent urination
Weak streams
Painful urination
Incomplete emptying of the bladder
And even the inability to urinate

Imagine the discomfort (I will share a real-life story on this tomorrow)

The embarrassment

The frustration of constantly needing to find a restroom or, worse, not being able to go when you need to.

Not sweet, not bitter white nut with black shell.

You know it right?

That's how small your prostate is but can cause SERIOUS life threatening problems for you.

Your prostate is located below your bladder and wraps the top of the urethra (the pipe for letting out urine).

Its closeness to the bladder and urethra explains why men with prostate issues have concomitant urinary issues.

So when prostate enlarges or get inflamed. The urinary tract get the feeling and start misbehaving.

We will elaborate on these misbehaviours tomorrow.

As small as prostate is, it plays BIG role in men's health and requires attention.

Prostate issues including cancer are becoming alarmingly common.

I will leave you today with some facts:

1 in 4 black men (African men(Nigerian men) may go down with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

So if you are in a gathering of 20 men right now, what it means is that 5 of you might get diagnosed with prostate cancer.

We can't tell who without running some tests.

Another interesting fact is that 1 in 8 men over 40 years have increased risk of having enlarged prostate and should prioritise yearly screenings.
