Stages of labour
Labour is divided into three stages:-

1) From the onset of efficient contraction till full dilatation of the cervix
2) From full dilatation of the cervix till the baby is delivered.
3) From delivery of baby till delivery of placenta.

The components of labour are the power, the passage and the passenger.

1) Power:- This refers to the muscle involved in pushing the baby out of the uterus.
During labour there is increased intra uterine pressure. The primary force come from the uterine muscle while the abdominal muscle and diaphragm are the secondary forces.

2) Passage:- The passage consists of the bony pelvis, the cervix and the va**na.
The body pelvis must be adequate to allow the passage of the fetus. X-ray pelvimetry can be used to assess the pelvis at about the 36th week of pregnancy.
The cervix and the va**na offer no resistance to the passage of the fetus except in cases of stenosis.

3) Passenger:- These consist of the fetus, the placenta and the membrane.

In my next post we will be talking about the responsibility of the nurses on duty to a pregnant woman that is admitted to their hospital.

LABOUR AND COMPLICATIONS
1) NORMAL LABOUR
Labour is the onset of painful regular uterine contraction after the 28th week of pregnancy leading to the dilatation of the cervix and expulsion of the products of conception.
It is said to be normal if it occurs after the 37th week of within 24 hours.

The symptoms of labour includes.

1) painful regular uterine contractions
2) passage of mucus plug mixed with blood. This is called 'show'
3) Rupture of membrane
4) Shortening and dilating of cervix.

It should be remembered that during pregnancy there are often times painless irregular contraction of the uterus. It will not lead to the dilatation of the cervix. This contraction is called Braxton -Hick's Contraction.

Next post we will be discussing about the stages of labour and how many stages of labour
