HIGH BLOOD SUGAR
🟣 What is high blood sugar?
➟ High blood sugar, also called hyperglycemia, means the glucose level in the blood is higher than normal.
➟ It can happen in people with diabetes and sometimes may be the first clue that diabetes is present.
➟ If it stays high for too long, it can harm the body and in severe cases can become an emergency.
🟣 Common signs and symptoms
➟ Very increased thirst is common.
➟ Peeing more often, especially at night, can happen.
➟ A dry mouth may occur.
➟ Many people feel tired, weak, or low on energy.
➟ Blurred vision can happen when blood sugar is high.
➟ Some people also develop headache.
🟣 Other possible symptoms
➟ Some people feel hungrier than usual.
➟ Weight loss without trying can happen, especially when diabetes is not well controlled.
➟ Frequent infections, including urinary infections or yeast infections, may happen more often.
➟ Cuts or sores may heal more slowly.
🟣 Important point
➟ Some people may have mild or no obvious symptoms, especially early in type 2 diabetes.
➟ Because of that, high blood sugar is sometimes found only during a blood test.
🟣 When it becomes dangerous
➟ Very high blood sugar can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), especially in type 1 diabetes, though it can also happen in some people with type 2 diabetes.
➟ Warning signs include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fruity-smelling breath, fast deep breathing, marked tiredness, or confusion.
➟ This needs urgent medical care.
🟣 When to get checked quickly
➟ Very thirsty and peeing a lot
➟ Blurred vision or unusual tiredness
➟ Repeated infections or unexplained weight loss
➟ Vomiting, fruity breath, confusion, or fast deep breathing
➟ These symptoms should not be ignored, especially if you already have diabetes or are at risk for it.
🟣 What to do
➟ A blood sugar test is needed to confirm high blood sugar.
➟ If you already have diabetes, follow your treatment plan and speak to your doctor if readings stay high.
➟ Early testing and treatment can help prevent complications.
