*Why Nigerian Women Need to Know About Fatty Liver Disease*
There is a disease that is quietly growing among Nigerian women and most of them do not even know they have it. It is called fatty liver disease. And unlike many illnesses that come with obvious signs, this one can live in your body for years without giving you any warning.
Your liver is one of the hardest working organs in your body. It processes everything you eat and drink, cleans your blood, and helps your body use energy properly. But when too much fat builds up inside the liver, it begins to struggle. It cannot do its job the way it should. Over time, if nothing changes, that fat causes inflammation, then scarring, and eventually the liver can begin to fail.
So why are Nigerian women at risk?
The biggest reason is the way our diets have changed. Many Nigerian women are eating more processed foods, more white rice, more bread, more fried foods, and more sugary drinks than previous generations did. These foods cause fat to build up in the liver faster than the body can clear it.
Excess body weight is also a major factor. When you carry too much fat, especially around your belly, a lot of that fat ends up around and inside your organs , including your liver. This is why fatty liver disease is so closely connected to obesity.
There is also the issue of insulin resistance. When the body stops responding to insulin properly , which happens with excess weight and poor diet , the liver starts storing more fat than it should. Many women do not know they have insulin resistance until a doctor tests them for it.
The difficult truth is that fatty liver disease has no symptoms in its early stages. You will not feel pain. You will not feel sick. Many women only find out they have it during a routine scan or blood test done for something else entirely.
It is on the rise and many women do not know they are at risk. The encouraging part is that fatty liver disease is one of the few serious liver conditions that can be reversed , especially when caught early. The number one treatment is not medication. It is weight loss, a cleaner diet, and regular movement. Losing just 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can significantly reduce the fat in your liver and allow it to begin healing.
Your liver is quietly doing so much for you every day. The least you can do is protect it.
We love you
