The recent footage of police misconduct in Edo State is a heartbreaking departure from the ideals of service and protection that should define our sovereignty. At Heal the World Organisation (HTWO), we find such acts of incivility and aggression against the very citizens our institutions are sworn to protect utterly unacceptable.
To see power weaponized against the vulnerable is a violation of the fundamental human dignity that we strive daily to uphold. We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms; it is not just a breach of professional conduct, but a wound on the collective soul of our nation.
A Roadmap to Restoration
To move beyond condemnation toward lasting change, we propose a multi-dimensional approach to healing the rift between the people and the police:
Radical Accountability: We call for more than just internal disciplinary measures. There must be transparent, public-facing consequences for officers who violate human rights to restore faith in the system.
Psychological Evaluation and Support: Many instances of misconduct stem from burnout and untreated trauma within the force. We advocate for mandatory, periodic mental health assessments and stress management training for all field officers.
The "Community Guardianship" Model: Shifting the training curriculum from "law enforcement" to "community guardianship." This emphasizes conflict de-escalation and emotional intelligence over physical intimidation.
Technology as a Shield: The immediate implementation of body-worn cameras for all officers on patrol. When actions are recorded, accountability is no longer a matter of opinion, but a matter of record.
Our Commitment
At HTWO, we believe that healing the world begins with healing our own communities. We will continue to advocate for the rights of the marginalized and provide a voice for those silenced by intimidation.
Change is not a quiet event; it is a persistent movement. We urge the authorities to treat this incident as a catalyst for systemic reform, ensuring that the safety of the Nigerian citizen is never again treated as an option, but as a sacred duty.
Together, we can Heal the World...
