June 2026, Felicitations.

To my esteemed Management and staff I heartily join you to specially thank Almighty God for ushering us into the very half post of this year 2026.

I salute your courage and determination in the face of odds confronting us daily in the cause of serving the public who visit our facility. It is indeed the price we pay as public servants and for service to humanity.

Thank you also for your commitment, dedication and cooperation I have been receiving from you all since my assumption as Chief Medical Director. No doubt it has energized me to continue making sacrifice and putting in my best to ensure and actualize the dream of repositioning our Teaching hospital to it's pride of place in the commity of teaching hospitals across our country.

I urge you to increase the momentum of productivity and excellence in our attitude to work, while on my part I will ensure that issues of welfare continue to get the attention it deserves,

Eid El Kabir: Goodwill Messege.

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, heartily felicitates with the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, and all Muslim faithfuls on the occasion the 2026 Eid El Kabir celebration.

This special festival is a celebration of the profound and total submission of Prophet Ibrahim to the will of Almighty God as demonstrated in his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Divine command.

Eid El Kabir is therefore a reminder of the values of sacrifice, obedience, humility, compassion and selflessness, key ingredients for peaceful coexistence and nation building.

As we mark the sacred festival, Management , staff and indeed the hospital community are encouraged to uphold selflessness and sacrifice, key lessons of the occasion, as we work to build a culture of care, excellence and service to humanity.

We commend all Muslim faithfuls in our hospital and the nation at large for their immense contributions to our successes as an institution.

UPTH HOSTS ELELE-ALIMINI MONARCH, AS CMD ASSURES COMMUNITY OF INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT

The Management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has expressed delight over the visit of the Elele-Alimini Monarch, Eze Peter W. Wagbara CP (Rtd), and his royal entourage, describing it as the first royal visit to the hospital since the new administrative leadership assumed office in January.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Chituru Orluwene DSSRS JP, who received the monarch alongside members of management, recalled the longstanding friendship and cordial relationship they have shared from their youthful days, a bond which, according to him, became even stronger during the monarch’s distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force where he rose to the rank of Commissioner of Police.

Prof. Orluwene extolled the sterling qualities of the royal father, describing him as a disciplined, thoroughbred and exemplary police officer whose leadership and influence have continued to positively impact the Elele-Alimini community. He noted that the visit was not only a personal honour to him but also a remarkable moment for the entire UPTH family.

The CMD assured the monarch that Elele-Alimini Kingdom would not be sidelined under his administration, stressing that the management of the hospital remains committed to fairness, inclusiveness and the delivery of effective, efficient and quality healthcare services in line with the mandate of the institution.

Speaking during the visit, the Royal Father, Eze Peter W. Wagbara CP (Rtd), described the occasion as a moment of joy, pride and fulfilment for himself and the entire Elele-Alimini Kingdom.
The monarch thanked God for the appointment of Prof. Orluwene as Chief Medical Director of UPTH, noting that the community considers him one of their own and remains optimistic about the positive transformation his leadership would bring to the institution.

Eze Wagbara charged the CMD to remain focused and resolute in the discharge of his duties, urging members of the hospital management team to give him their maximum cooperation, loyalty and constant support to enable him actualise his vision of repositioning the hospital to its pride of place as one of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary healthcare institutions.

He further expressed appreciation to the CMD and the entire management team for the warm reception accorded to him and his entourage, describing the large turnout of management staff as a symbolic honour not only to his person but to the entire Elele-Alimini community.

Case definitions for Ebola viral Disease

Suspected case:

Any person with a sudden onset of fever and at least three of the following symptoms: - headaches, lethargy, anorexia/loss of appetite, aching muscles or joints, stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, difficulty breathing, diarrhoea or hiccups AND travel history to DRC / Uganda or other country reporting suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola

OR

Any person with inexplicable bleeding AND travel history to DRC / Uganda or other countries reporting suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola

OR

Any person with sudden onset of fever with or without any of the following symptoms; headaches, lethargy, anorexia/loss of appetite, aching muscles or joints, stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, difficulty breathing, diarrhea or hiccups and having had contact with a confirmed or probable case of Ebola

OR

Any person with a sudden onset of fever with or without any of the following symptoms; headaches, lethargy, anorexia/loss of appetite, aching muscles or joints, stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, difficulty breathing, diarrhea or hiccups and who is not responding well to malaria and have contact with wildlife.

Probable case:

Any suspected case deceased or alive, where it has not been possible to collect specimens for laboratory confirmation having an epidemiological link with a confirmed case.

Laboratory confirmed case:

Any suspected or probable case with a positive laboratory result.

Laboratory confirmed cases must test positive for the virus antigen, either by detection of virus RNA by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT- PCR), or by detection of IgM antibodies directed against Ebola.

A contact person is an individual who has been exposed to a person infected with an EVHD within the last 21 days and may be at risk of becoming infected themselves. A contact line list form is attached.

For contacts, they are to be quarantined for 21 days, followed up, and report any symptoms or signs to the nearest health facility/state Epidemiologist.

PROF. ORLUWENE COMMENDS DR. DIAMOND TAMUNOKURO ON EMERGENCE AS NMA SECRETARY GENERAL, CALLS FOR PURPOSEFUL NATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Prof. Chituru Orluwene DSSRS, JP, has described the emergence of a Rivers State indigene as Secretary General of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as a remarkable development capable of strengthening the fortunes of medical professionals from the state while also amplifying Rivers State’s voice within the nation’s apex medical body.

Prof. Orluwene stated this during a thank-you visit by the newly elected Secretary General of the association, Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, alongside officials of the Rivers State chapter of the NMA. According to the CMD, Dr. Tamunokuro’s emergence did not come as a surprise, considering the leadership qualities, dedication and administrative competence he displayed during his tenure as Chairman of the Rivers State NMA. He noted that these qualities, coupled with the goodwill and support he has built over the years, positioned him strongly for the national assignment.

While expressing delight over the successful outcome of the Kano election, Prof. Orluwene also commended the Rivers State and South-South delegations for their unity, solidarity and collective resolve in supporting one of their own, a development he said ultimately translated into the overwhelming victory recorded at the polls. He further expressed confidence that the new executive position would not only guarantee effective representation for Rivers State at the national level, but would also improve the state’s visibility in the consideration of strategic opportunities, projects and appointments within the medical profession.

Building on this optimism, the CMD advised Dr. Tamunokuro to remain diligent, focused and committed to service, stressing that the office should be seen as part of a broader journey toward greater accomplishments in international medical politics and leadership. He maintained that attaining such heights in the future would undoubtedly attract immense benefits and recognition to Rivers State, the South-South region and Nigeria at large.

Earlier in his remarks, the newly elected Secretary General, Dr. Tamunokuro, expressed profound appreciation to the CMD for the support, encouragement and prayers extended to him throughout his campaign ahead of the Kano election. He described his emergence as a historic achievement for Rivers State and the medical community, adding that the office would provide a strategic platform for engaging policymakers while also projecting the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital nationally as one of the foremost federal tertiary health institutions in the South-South region.
