ANAEMIA IN PREGNANCY

Anaemia in pregnancy occurs when a pregnant woman does not have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen properly to both mother and baby.

It is very common during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters.

🩸 WHY DOES IT HAPPEN IN PREGNANCY?
During pregnancy, the body produces more blood to support the growing baby. If the mother does not get enough nutrients—especially iron—the body may not produce enough healthy red blood cells.

⚠️ CAUSES OF ANAEMIA IN PREGNANCY

1. IRON DEFICIENCY
The most common cause.
The baby uses the mother’s iron stores for growth and development.

2. FOLATE DEFICIENCY
Folate is important for forming healthy red blood cells and preventing birth defects.

3. VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY
Less common, but can occur in women with poor nutrition or absorption problems.

4. BLOOD LOSS
From heavy bleeding before or during pregnancy.

5. MULTIPLE PREGNANCIES
Carrying twins or more increases iron demand.
