At UDUYARS, clear and relatable communication remains a cornerstone of our advocacy. Over the years, we have continuously explored creative and engaging approaches to communicate the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

This commitment inspired our 2025 AMR Art Exhibition, where we engaged over 200 secondary school and university students, encouraging them to explore creative expressions of AMR through art.

Through drama, paintings, poetry, and other artistic forms, students brought the issue to life with remarkable insight and originality.

As we commemorate World Poetry Day, we revisit one of the oldest and most powerful forms of expressionโ€”spoken word poetry.

Listen to Mukhtar Anoze Ishaq, winner of the 2025 UDUYARS AMR Art Exhibition, whose words resonate deeply:

โ€œEvery abuse was a graduation ceremony for a superbug.โ€

Together, let us continue the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

The UDUYARS mission recently made its way to the Faculty of Agriculture at Usmanu Danfodiyo University for an impactful orientation session.

The orientation was all about recognizing that our food systems starting from the soil to the livestock pens are the true starting point for global health.

The discussion of why the next generation of farmers are the most important shield we have against superbugs was dived into.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and agriculture are deeply intertwined, primarily because the global food system is one of the largest consumers of antimicrobial drugs. While these medicines are vital for treating sick animals, their widespread use has created an environment where "superbugs" can thrive and eventually jump to humans.

With over 1.27 million lives lost annually to AMR, the conversation couldn't be more urgent.

Agriculturists are essentially public health officers in boots. Whether itโ€™s managing livestock or spraying crops, the decisions made on the farm determine if bacteria stay treatable or become "untouchable" by modern medicine.

The orientation was wrapped up by challenging the students to be advocates. Beyond the classroom, we want to see them educating local farmers on withdrawal periods and the dangers of drug misuse, ensuring that the food reaching our tables is safe and resistance-free.

We wrapped up by reminding everyone that as future agriculturists, the safety of our food system and the health of our nation truly starts in their hands. Weโ€™re counting on this new generation of UDUS farmers to be the shield that keeps superbugs off our plates and out of our environment.

On the 7th of February, 2026, the UDUYARS Orientation Programme was successfully organized for students of Human Dietetics and Nutrition at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital. The event brought together future nutrition professionals to deepen their understanding of the crucial link between nutrition, immune function, food safety, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Participants included students of the department, student representatives as well as the UDUYARS President.

The orientation began with an introduction to UDUYARSโ€™s mission and the specific goals for the session. The goals include highlighting the impact of healthy nutrition on immune strength, to explain how better immunity reduces infection risk, to motivate nutrition students to become advocates for food safety and AMR prevention.

AMR already contributes to over 1.27 million direct deaths each year globally and affects millions more indirectly through treatment failures and prolonged illness.

Our facilitators emphasized that dietetics professionals play a frontline role in public health, given their direct involvement in promoting safe dietary practices and influencing food-related behaviours in communities.

A primary focus of the orientation was illustrating how nutrient-rich diets are foundational to a robust immune system.

According to the World Health Organization, essential nutrients including vitamins A, C, D, E, zinc, selenium and high-quality protein support immune cell development, antibody production, and the bodyโ€™s ability to respond to pathogens.

The facilitators also explained that a competent immune system helps reduce the incidence and severity of infectious diseases, thereby decreasing reliance on antibiotics and other antimicrobials. This is a key strategy in slowing the development and spread of resistance.

One of the culminating themes of the orientation was empowering students to become proactive advocates in the fight against AMR by educating families and communities on the importance of food safety, judicious antimicrobial use, and the benefits of balanced diets for immunity.

The orientation concluded with a call to action, inspiring participants to apply what they have learned in their studies, professional development, and future careers.
