On the 7th of February, 2026, the UDUYARS Orientation Programme was successfully organized for students of Human Dietetics and Nutrition at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital. The event brought together future nutrition professionals to deepen their understanding of the crucial link between nutrition, immune function, food safety, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Participants included students of the department, student representatives as well as the UDUYARS President.
The orientation began with an introduction to UDUYARSโs mission and the specific goals for the session. The goals include highlighting the impact of healthy nutrition on immune strength, to explain how better immunity reduces infection risk, to motivate nutrition students to become advocates for food safety and AMR prevention.
AMR already contributes to over 1.27 million direct deaths each year globally and affects millions more indirectly through treatment failures and prolonged illness.
Our facilitators emphasized that dietetics professionals play a frontline role in public health, given their direct involvement in promoting safe dietary practices and influencing food-related behaviours in communities.
A primary focus of the orientation was illustrating how nutrient-rich diets are foundational to a robust immune system.
According to the World Health Organization, essential nutrients including vitamins A, C, D, E, zinc, selenium and high-quality protein support immune cell development, antibody production, and the bodyโs ability to respond to pathogens.
The facilitators also explained that a competent immune system helps reduce the incidence and severity of infectious diseases, thereby decreasing reliance on antibiotics and other antimicrobials. This is a key strategy in slowing the development and spread of resistance.
One of the culminating themes of the orientation was empowering students to become proactive advocates in the fight against AMR by educating families and communities on the importance of food safety, judicious antimicrobial use, and the benefits of balanced diets for immunity.
The orientation concluded with a call to action, inspiring participants to apply what they have learned in their studies, professional development, and future careers.
