This Is What Long-Term Pacifier Use Can Do to a Child's Teeth.

Pacifiers can help soothe infants, but long-term use may affect the normal growth and development of the jaws and teeth. Constant sucking pressure over time can contribute to problems such as an anterior open bite, increased overjet, crossbite, and tooth misalignment.

The longer and more frequently a child uses a pacifier, the greater the risk of developing these changes. In many cases, stopping the habit early allows the teeth and jaws to return toward more normal development. However, continued use beyond the preschool years may increase the likelihood of needing orthodontic treatment later.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends gradually discontinuing pacifier use as children grow, particularly beyond age 3.

Small habits during childhood can have a lasting impact on the development of a healthy smile.

A study published in the International Journal of Cardiology found that adults who brushed their teeth at least twice daily for two minutes had a significantly lower risk of major cardiovascular events than those who brushed less frequently.

Researchers believe chronic gum inflammation may allow oral bacteria and inflammatory molecules to enter the bloodstream, where they could contribute to cardiovascular disease. However, the study shows an association and does not prove that brushing itself prevents heart disease.

Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste remains one of the simplest and most effective habits for maintaining healthy teeth, healthy gums, and potentially supporting overall health.

A new study has found that Porphyromonas gingivalis—a major bacterium involved in chronic gum disease—was detected in heart tissue collected from patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Researchers found that higher levels of this oral bacterium were associated with increased atrial fibrosis, a buildup of scar-like tissue in the heart. This type of structural change can disrupt the heart's electrical signaling system and may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common form of irregular heartbeat.

The findings suggest that periodontal disease may affect more than just the gums. Scientists believe that chronic inflammation and the movement of oral bacteria into the bloodstream could contribute to changes in cardiovascular tissues over time.

While more research is needed to confirm cause and effect, the study adds to growing evidence linking oral health and heart health.

Healthy gums are not just important for keeping teeth—they may play a role in supporting overall cardiovascular well-being.

A toothache doesn't always stay in the tooth. It can sometimes trigger a headache too.

The reason lies in the trigeminal nerve—the largest sensory nerve in the head and face. This nerve carries pain signals from the teeth, gums, jaw, and much of the head to the brain. Because these areas share the same nerve pathways, the brain can sometimes perceive tooth pain as pain in the temple, forehead, eye area, or side of the head.

Deep cavities, tooth infections, cracked teeth, and impacted wisdom teeth can all irritate the trigeminal nerve, causing pain to radiate beyond the mouth. This phenomenon is known as referred pain, where the source of the pain and the location where it is felt are not always the same.

A headache is not always a head problem. In some cases, the real source may be a tooth.

This woman has the most teeth ever found in a single tooth socket 🦷

A Canadian woman has been recognized by Guinness World Records after developing one of the rarest dental anomalies ever documented — four teeth sharing a single socket. The record was officially awarded to Sylvia Boctor of Canada, who held a total of four teeth within one socket due to the presence of three supernumerary (extra) teeth alongside a normal tooth.

Sylvia first discovered the unusual condition when a panoramic dental X-ray was taken at the age of 20. According to Guinness World Records, many dentists were astonished by the finding, with some reporting that they had only encountered such a condition in textbooks.

Despite recommendations for extraction, the teeth remained symptom-free for many years and caused no significant problems with speaking or chewing.

On January 30, 2026, Sylvia was officially awarded the Guinness World Records title for Most Teeth in a Single Socket (Female), with four teeth occupying the same socket — a category for which no other record holders are currently known.

A tongue piercing may seem like a simple form of self-expression, but it can also affect oral health in ways many people don't expect.

Every time the metal jewelry contacts the teeth, it can place repeated stress on the enamel. Over months or years, this may increase the risk of chipped or cracked teeth, enamel wear, gum recession, and irritation of the surrounding soft tissues. Because the mouth naturally contains hundreds of species of bacteria, a fresh piercing also creates an opportunity for infection—especially if proper aftercare is not followed.

A 2025 scientific literature review found consistent evidence linking tongue piercings to complications such as tooth fractures, enamel damage, gingival recession, infections, and other oral problems. The American Dental Association (ADA) also advises against cosmetic oral piercings because the potential health risks outweigh the cosmetic benefits.

Many people wear tongue jewelry without experiencing major problems, but understanding the possible risks can help in making an informed decision and recognizing complications early.
