*INTRODUCTION TO SNAIL FARMING IN NIGERIA*

*Snail rearing* is a business opportunity which is sometimes overlooked because most people feel it can never be a source of income or wealth.

Aside that, some people also felt and have the conception that snail farming can never be regard as a business because people can easily pick up snail in the farms after rainfalls for consumption without setting them up as a business.

That’s the reason why animal husbandry like poultry farming, piggery and fishery are more popular.

However, even despite that, snail farming as a business enterprise is one of the numerous approaches which will and has successfully transforms Nigeria’s subsistence agriculture.

The opportunities in snail rearing by far outweigh its challenges or problems.

Snail farming in Nigeria requires small capital and the working capital may be very low, compare to other animal husbandry like poultry, fishery, cattle rearing, goat farming, etc.

This is so because snail’s feeds are very native, national or local.

However, snail farming business in Nigeria is a type or kind of agricultural venture that if one ventures in it diligently, he/she would not have any cause to regret.

Know that the demand for snail is large in Nigeria as such the market potential of snail is inexhaustible, domestically and internationally

so if you feel that you are not selling as much as you expect in Nigeria, then feel free to export your snail to other countries who also have a high demand for it.

Snail farming business can be very profitable in *Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, South Africa, and Nigeria.*

But in Nigeria, snail farming business is not highly considered and put into consideration as how it is been done in other countries.

In Australia and USA, snail farming is a big business, providing opportunities to many farmers.

In UK, snails can be seen in many supermarkets and stores.

Looking on how serious other countries has taken snail rearing business, you will permit me to Say that we are really in a great deal lacking behind in snail production in Nigeria.

One thing you should know about snail farming (Heliciculture) which is the process of raising land snails specifically for human consumption or use is that, snail rearing is as easy as *ABC.*

The only considerable thing the rearing of snail requires is *your attention, care and good management.*

Another thing you should know is that snails reproduce rapidly.

They are capable of producing 100 eggs or more during reproduction.

The discovery of the Achatina Achatina, which is also referred to as giant Ghana snail or giant tiger land snail is very high prolific specie of snail which has the potential and can lay up to 1,000,000 eggs or more.

*I am sure you will agree with me now, that snail farming business in Nigeria could be indeed a profitable business.*

Fruits: You can get damaged fruits from fruit vendors for free or at a very reduced price

The Achachatina Marginata species lays 6-14 eggs four times a year
The Achatina Achatina species lays 80-350 eggs at once, and they lay eggs about one to three times a year
Lastly, the Achatina Fulica species lays as much as 100-400 eggs about six times a year

Looking at the data above, you might be tempted to go for the Achatina Fulica species but the truth is that the Achatina Marginata is the biggest land snail on earth, and as such is preferred by many people locally in Nigeria and around the world. Calcium plays a vital role in snail Farming, there are many sources of calcium for snails.

Woodash, shells, oyster etc. Snails need calcium to develop their shells.

Now if you want your snails to grow into a very big size, there's what we call *feed Formulation*

When you formulate their feeds, they tend to grow better and healthier, I showed my previous students how to formulate feed, the right ingredient and proportion to use.

We have different species of snails, the AA and AM are the most reared in Africa. AM lays eggs while AA can lay up to 200 eggs. Some species snails lays as much as 100-400 eggs about six times a year. Imagine when you have about 500 snails and each produces up to 300 -400 baby snails. You will have nothing less than 150,000 - 200,000 snails just at a single lay, and snails lay several batches of eggs in a year. In one year, you will have nothing less than 1 million snails. If you decide to sell as low as let's say #20 /snail that means you will smile to the bank with 20 million naira. The good news is that snail is very costly in Nigeria because of it's meat with high protein content and no fat. It's an excellent meat for diabetic patients. This is why you should have a Snail Farm.

*Cost Of Starting A Snail Farm In Nigeria*

The cost of starting a snail farm in Nigeria varies from place to place, but it is heavily dependent on the type of materials you are using and whether you are leasing land for your farm or not. let us say that you are using your backyard space, and you are building a small pen

Here the cost of things you will need:

Snails For Rearing: 300 to 400 Naira for point of lay-ready snails. Let’s assume you are buying 50 for your small snail farm. That with total up to 22,500 or 15,000

*Note* in snail business, you buy your snails *only once* from there, it continues to multiply and grow because you will be doing the Hatching yourself which is very very easy to do.
unlike Poultry Chicken where you can't hatch your eggs without Tech and you have to keep buying fowl.

In snail Farming, it's not like that, you only buy your snails once and you're done, it keeps producing and producing. Now let's see the cost of feeding.

Cost Of Feed: just formulate it yourself, I taught how to do it. Or

Fruits: You can get damaged fruits from fruit vendors for free or at a very reduced price

They also eat junks and left overs.
There's a little trick to do if you want them to keep laying eggs.

The Achachatina Marginata species lays 6-14 eggs four times a year
The Achatina Achatina species lays 80-350 eggs at once, and they lay eggs about one to three times a year Lastly, the Achatina Fulica species lays as much as 100-400 eggs about six times a year

Looking at the data above, you might be tempted to go for the Achatina Fulica species but the truth is that the Achatina Marginata is the biggest land snail on earth so big that it can cover a full hand, and as such is preferred by many people locally in Nigeria and around the world. Additionally, studies have shown that the Achatina Achatina species is more suited to the African weather and condition than other species.

Snail Farming is almost *Zero cost* and the profit is high, unlike the poultry which is very very expensive.

And snails hardly die so long as you are trained on how to handle them.

Note: you buy your snail farm once and rear for a lifetime 🧬🧬🧬

Most people in the last training has started their own farm and are doing very well they are already Hatching and doing well.

Snails Business is very very lucrative but not all Snails command market value*

The first thing you should be aware of is the kind of snail you are Rearing so you don't end up playing around and wasting your time.

Most times, there are lot of persons telling me that their snails is not growing big and when I go further to check, I discover that they either picked the snails or around their compounds, bush or they got it from the local market.

Is there anything wrong with eating snails from the above sources?

The answer is No, they can be eaten well.

But

*Don't Start a Commercial Farm with them.*

Why if you may ask?

1. Most Snails found commonly around our homes are the Archachatina Fulica specie (AF) , fondly called *"City Lady"*, they rarely and hardly grow big.

City Lady (Achatina Fulica) don't command a good Market Value and are not eaten in some parts of Nigeria.

2. Snails Sold in our local markets are mostly those gotten from the wild.

The challenge with this species is that most of them can't grow beyond the sizes they're when you bought them, this is because they've attained maturity already.

Their shell 🐚 lack the capacity for growth and expansion.

Only buy snails from the market if you have the ability to differentiate between growing snails and grown snails.

3. When you travel to a new place, do you start associating, eating and enjoying their foods immediately? Definitely NO!

It's the same with snails and other living things.

They possess all the characteristics of living things just like you, one of which is their ability to adapt to new environment and foods.

Snails from the market and your compound are from the wild and have been exposed to different conditions all their life.

Temperature, humidity, food and other conditions necessary for snails to thrive. So expecting them to adapt immediately in your farm is asking for too much.

So they'll resist your feeds.

Why force them to eat watermelon, cucumber, Papaya and some of those concoction you call feeds which they've not seen or eaten all their life....if na you, you go chop am?

4. Getting your Breeding Stock from a known farmer is like relocating a family to a new city or town, the environment may be strange at first but together with loved ones, they can weather any Storm.

Strength in Unity is not only peculiar to humans if you doubt go and ask the ANTS.

Also your seller most definitely will put you on the know of their life style and other things you need to know.

Remember not all shortcuts will lead you home. What is worth doing is worth doing well.

Slow, Steady and Persistence wins the race.

To your snails farming success.πŸ₯‚πŸ₯‚

You can avoid some silly and unnecessary mistakes in snail Farming if you are being guided and trained from someone who has the experience.
