NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a modified form of the amino acid L-cysteine. It is best known for its mucolytic action and its role in supporting the body's production of glutathione, an important intracellular antioxidant.

The -SH (thiol) group is an important part of NAC's chemical structure.
🔬 HOW DOES NAC WORK?
Mucolytic action: NAC helps break disulfide bonds within mucus, reducing the thickness and stickiness of mucus and making it easier to clear from the airways.
Glutathione support: NAC provides cysteine, which the body needs to produce glutathione (GSH). Glutathione is one of the body's important intracellular antioxidant systems.

NAC is used as a mucolytic in conditions where thick or excessive mucus makes airway clearance difficult. It helps make mucus less viscous and easier to cough up.
🧬 LIVER HEALTH
NAC has an important established medical use in paracetamol (acetaminophen) poisoning. In this situation, it helps restore glutathione and can prevent or reduce serious liver injury.
However, this does NOT mean that routinely taking NAC is a general "liver detox."

NAC can increase the availability of cysteine for glutathione production and may influence oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways.
