The Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State Branch, heartily congratulates Dr. Edidiong Gabriel Inyang on her outstanding academic achievements at the 25th Physician’s Oath Taking Ceremony (Sponsio Academica) of the University of Uyo.

Her remarkable accomplishments, including Distinctions in Surgery and Community Medicine, as well as emerging as the Best Graduating Student in Surgery, Family Medicine, and Anesthesia, Best Graduating Female Student, and the Overall Best Graduating Student, stand as a testament to excellence, discipline, and dedication to the noble profession of medicine.

We also extend our warm congratulations to all her colleagues on their induction as members of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the Nigerian Medical Association. This marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of service, learning, and impact in healthcare delivery.

NMA-AKS, under the leadership of Prof. Aniekan Peter, has consistently supported and promoted academic excellence. In line with this commitment, the Association, for the first time in its history, instituted cash awards for the Overall Best Graduating Doctor and the Best Graduating Female Student. This initiative, which commenced at the 24th Sponsio Academica, aims to encourage excellence and inspire more females to pursue a career in medicine. We remain committed to sustaining this laudable tradition for years to come.

WORLD AIDS DAY

As we mark World AIDS Day, we are reminded that the HIV response in Nigeria is at a critical point. Donor support is declining, and the responsibility for sustaining essential services is shifting more to government and local systems. This transition demands stronger political commitment, smarter resource allocation, and a renewed focus on community ownership.

While these changes present real pressure on programmes and facilities, they also offer an opportunity to build a response that is truly homegrown and resilient. We need steady investment in treatment, prevention, and laboratory services. We also need policies that protect vulnerable groups and support the health workforce that keeps the system running.

The path ahead will not be easy, but progress remains possible when government, partners, and communities work with clear priorities and shared responsibility. Today is a reminder that ending AIDS is not just a global pledge. It is a duty we owe to our people.

Let us continue to advocate for sustainable funding, improved access to care, and a response that leaves no one behind.

APPRECIATION MESSAGE TO HIS EXCELLENCY
THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF AKWA IBOM STATE

The Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State Branch, expresses sincere appreciation to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for commissioning the General Hospital at Ikot Akpankuk in Ukanafun and for approving the installation of an MRI machine and dialysis units in the facility.

This intervention brings real relief to the people of Ukanafun who, for many years, lacked a functional general hospital and had to travel far for routine and emergency care. With these upgrades, the community will now have access to advanced diagnostic services and kidney care within their locality. It is a meaningful step toward strengthening secondary healthcare and improving outcomes for residents.

We also acknowledge the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, for his steady leadership and commitment to driving this vision. His efforts continue to support the growth and stability of healthcare delivery across the state.

The 2025 edition of the Physicians Day Symposium marked a fitting grand finale to the National Physicians Week celebration in Akwa Ibom State. The event, held in Uyo, was both inspiring and memorable, bringing together doctors, partners, and guests in a vibrant atmosphere of learning, recognition, and celebration.

The highlight of the symposium was an engaging lecture on “Tackling Burnout Among Physicians” delivered by Dr. Peter Inyang, who spoke passionately about the importance of mental well-being, work-life balance, and building supportive systems within the medical community.

A deeply touching moment came with the presentation of the first-ever NMA-AKS Scholarship Award to Miss Mfoniso Udoroh, daughter of our late colleague, Dr. Udoroh. Miss Udoroh, who scored an impressive 325 in JAMB and has been offered admission to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Uyo, received the award as part of NMA-AKS’ new scholarship initiative. The Association has institutionalized the scholarship to continue annually until she completes her medical education—a lasting tribute to our departed colleague and a firm statement of our commitment to supporting young aspiring doctors.

The event also featured the maiden NMA-AKS Chairman’s Awards, recognizing outstanding doctors across various categories for excellence in practice, mentorship, service, creativity, support, honesty, and versatility. It was a proud moment celebrating dedication and professionalism within our ranks.

Guests were treated to comedy and dance performances, presentations from our sponsors and partners, and an array of mouth-watering dishes that added colour and excitement to the day’s proceedings.

FROM THE NIGERIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, AKWA IBOM STATE BRANCH (NMA-AKS)

The Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State Branch, on behalf of all doctors in the state—especially those under the employment of the Akwa Ibom State Government—extends heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for his visionary leadership and firm commitment to repositioning the health sector through the ongoing State of Emergency in the Health Sector.

His Excellency has approved several landmark interventions to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve the welfare of health workers across the state. These include:

✅Employment of 2,000 new healthcare workers to boost manpower in health facilities.

✅Engagement of 900 retired health workers on contract to bridge workforce gaps.

✅Introduction of five new allowances for all healthcare professionals—Health Sector Peculiar Allowance, Retention Allowance, Teaching Allowance, Accoutrement Allowance, and a performance-based Rural Allowance.

✅Approval for the implementation of the Skipping Policy for eligible health workers.

✅Approval for the payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to all properly documented doctors in training.

✅Revitalization of General Hospitals and Primary Health Centres across the three senatorial districts.

✅Revitalization of the State Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories to enhance diagnostic capacity and disease surveillance.

✅Comprehensive review of existing health laws to strengthen regulation and governance in the health sector.

These actions reflect the Governor’s compassion, foresight, and commitment to building a healthier Akwa Ibom by improving motivation, welfare, and working conditions for all healthcare professionals.

The Association also commends the Honourable Commissioner for Health , Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and strategic coordination of this transformative initiative.
