What is an ulcer?

Ulcers are sores on the lining of your stomach or small intestine. Sore also could be on your esophagus (throat). Most ulcers are located in the small intestine. These ulcers are called duodenal ulcers. Stomach ulcers are called gastric ulcers. Ulcers in the throat are called esophageal ulcers.

Symptoms of an ulcer

Common ulcer symptoms include:

Discomfort between meals or during the night (duodenal ulcer)Discomfort when you eat or drink (gastric ulcer)Stomach pain that wakes you up at nightFeel full fastBloating, burning or dull pain in your stomachComes and goes days or weeks at a timeThe discomfort lasts for minutes or hours

If your ulcer becomes perforated (torn), it becomes a bleeding ulcer. This can cause the following symptoms:

NauseaVomiting bloodUnexpected weight lossBlood in your stoolPain in your back

What causes an ulcer?

Most ulcers are cause by Heliocobacter pylori (H. pylori). This is a bacterial infection. Acids from the foods we eat can make the pain and discomfort worse. Long-term use of aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines (ibuprofen) can cause ulcers. Stress and spicy foods can make an ulcer worse.

Can an ulcer be prevented or avoided?

You cannot prevent an ulcer caused by an H. pylori infection. However, you can reduce your risks by limiting aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines. Avoid foods that are acidic (orange juice) and spicy to reduce discomfort. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Today episode on Matters of your health..

What is toothache?

Literally, it is referred to as a pain in a tooth; anything that brings pain around the tooth area.

What are some of the causes of toothache?

There are many things that cause toothache. The major cause of this is caving; that is a hole in the tooth. We have gum disease and broken tooth and trauma. It could even be from a tumour affecting the joint of the teeth.

Is there any other home remedy that works for toothache?

People have different home remedies for different ailments. As a professional, I don’t recommend home remedies for any dental issue because no matter what they do, the pain will return eventually.

There is this scenario I love to paint to people. When you enter a house and the place stinks because there is a dead rat in the house. No matter the amount of air freshener that you use, the smell will never leave because the root cause has not been addressed. It’s like that too; if they don’t go to the hospital for proper treatment, the toothache would return incessantly. You have to treat that tooth itself.

Does toothache come with mouth odour?

Not necessarily. It depends on the cause of the toothache and the stage of the toothache. If it has really gone bad, it could definitely smell.

What is tooth abscess?

An abscess is an infection that occurs on any part of the body. So, in case of the tooth, it is an infection that occurs in the tooth.

How is toothache diagnosed?

What we do is ask a series of questions from the patients to know the type that the patient has.

What are the risk factors for toothache?

The risk factor for toothache is diet and oral health habits. When you keep eating food that has sugar, especially carbohydrate meal, it could lead to toothache. The second is oral habits; one needs to brush one’s teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Can complications arise from toothache?

Yes; many complications can arise from toothache. In case of abscess,

Arthritis is not a single disease; it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions. People of all ages, sexes and races can and do have arthritis, and it is one of the leading causes of disability. It is most common among women and occurs more frequently as people get older.

Common arthritis joint symptoms include:

•Swelling, pain

•Stiffness

•Decreased range of motion.

Symptoms may come and go. They can be mild, moderate or severe. Severe arthritis can result in chronic pain, inability to do daily activities and make it difficult to walk or climb stairs. Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes. These changes may be visible, such as knobby finger joints, but often the damage can only be seen on X-ray. Some types of arthritis also affect the heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin as well as the joints. There are different types of arthritis:

Degenerative Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. When the cartilage — the cushioning surface on the ends of bones — wears away, bone rubs against bone, causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Over time, joints can lose strength and pain may become chronic.

Risk factors include excess weight, family history, age and previous injury (an anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, tear, for example).

When the joint symptoms of osteoarthritis are mild or moderate, they can be managed by:

•Balancing activity with rest

•Using hot and cold therapies

•Regular physical activity

•Maintaining a healthy weight

•Strengthening the muscles around the joint for added support

•Using assistive devices

•Taking over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medicines

•Avoiding excessive repetitive movements.

If joint symptoms are severe, causing limited mobility and affecting quality of life, some of the above management strategies may be helpful, but joint replacement may be necessary.call 09076477155

Facts about period pain

If you have dysmenorrhoea you are not alone. Around 80% of women experience period pain at some stage in their lifetime. You can suffer from period pain from your early teens right up to the menopause. Most women experience some discomfort during menstruation, especially on the first day. But in 5% to 10% of women the pain is severe enough to disrupt their life. If your mother suffered period pains, you are more likely to suffer too. In 40% of women, period pain is accompanied by premenstrual symptoms, such as bloating, tender breasts, a swollen stomach, lack of concentration, mood swings, clumsiness and tiredness.

There are two different types of period pain:

Primary Dysmenorrhoea

This commonly occurs in teenage girls and young women, towards the beginning of menstrual life. The cramping pains are caused by the womb contracting to shed its lining. There may also be pain caused by the decreased supply of blood to the womb. The pain is mainly in the lower part of the abdomen but can go into the back and down the front of the thighs. Some women feel nauseated at the same time. It is a perfectly natural condition and for many women is simply a mild monthly discomfort. Primary dysmenorrhoea can be eased with the contraceptive pill as well as some relaxation techniques.

Secondary Dysmenorrhoea

This may not start until your mid-twenties or later. It is unlikely to cease after childbirth. The pain is not restricted to “time of the month” bleeding and can occur throughout the cycle. Periods may become heavier and more prolonged, and in*******se may be painful. Secondary dysmenorrhoea can be a sign of other conditions, including pelvic infections, which may need urgent attention. If you start to experience period pain as an adult you should not hesitate to consult a GP.

Coping with period pain

There are a number of simple ways to ease the discomfort.

• Relax in a hot bath with aromatherapy oils.
• Cuddle a hot water bottle.

5 things that causes menstrual pains

Menstruation is a periodic discharging of the me**es in a woman, the flow of blood and cells from the lining of the uterus in uninseminated females of humans and other primates. The way many sees their menstrual periods differeth from others some comes early than others which is why all woman need to be calculative to avoid extral stories. Menstruation is a normal thing for all woman that have reached her puberty age, but at most times things get complicated that now result to pains that are unbearable.

According to Mayo clinic staff: Menstrual pains can be caused by:

Endometriosis. The tissue that lines your uterus becomes implanted outside your uterus, most commonly on your fallopian tubes, ovaries or the tissue lining your pelvis.

Uterine fibroids. These noncancerous growths in the wall of the uterus can cause pain.

Adenomyosis. The tissue that lines your uterus begins to grow into the muscular walls of the uterus.

Pelvic inflammatory disease. This infection of the female reproductive organs is usually caused by sexually transmitted bacteria.

Cervical stenosis. In some women, the opening of the cervix is small enough to impede menstrual flow, causing a painful increase of pressure within the uterus.

Note, During your menstrual period, your uterus contracts to help expel its lining. Hormonelike substances (prostaglandins) involved in pain and inflammation trigger the uterine muscle contractions. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more-severe menstrual cramps.

Complications

Menstrual cramps don't cause other medical complications, but they can interfere with school, work and social activities.

Certain conditions associated with menstrual cramps can have complications, though. For example, endometriosis can cause fertility problems. Pelvic inflammatory disease can scar your fallopian tubes, increasing the risk of a fertilized egg implanting outside of your
