Managing Contractions During Labour with the help of your Birth Partner
Contractions can feel intense, but you don’t have to face them alone. Your birth partner can make a huge difference by helping you feel safe, supported and grounded.
Birth Partners can encourage slow, steady breaths. This way you are being reminded by your partner by breathing with you and that you relax your jaw, shoulders and hands.
Birth Partners can help you with massages, counter-pressure on the lower back, encourage you to a warm shower or bath or simply holding hands. Birth Partner can ask you what feels good as every labour is unique. This can be a moment to connect and articulate what feels good for you as a birthing person/mother.
Birth Partner can offer small sips of water or warm herbal tea between contractions to you.
Your partner can say: “You’re doing so well. I’m right here. One contraction at a time.”
Walking, rocking, leaning forward, using a birth ball or changing positions may help you find what feels most comfortable and all of this can be encouraged by your birth partner
Your birth partner can protect your space by keeping the environment calm, reduce unnecessary conversation and help communicate your birth wishes to the birth team.
