🫚 Galangal Essential Oil
Steam-distilled from the rhizome. Peppery and green on the opening, with a cool, almost pine-like lift running beneath the heat and a dry, woody finish. Sharper than ginger and far less sweet — this one is an accent, not a base.

One oil, and it changes the shape of every spice blend you put it in. Whether you're formulating soap, candles or reed diffusers, it pairs cleanly with cedarwood, black pepper, sweet orange and frankincense — a way to give a warm blend a fresh spine without reaching for citrus.

🥥 Happy World Coconut Day — and a warning: coconut wax doesn't smell like coconut. Neither does coconut oil soap.

On your bench coconut is three separate materials, and only one of them brings the scent.

The wax carries it. NatureWax C-6 (soy + coconut) pours at 70–80°C, holds up to 10% fragrance and sets with a smooth, creamy top. For melts and tea lights, Nature Wax 660-55M pours cool at 55–60°C and takes up to 15% — around 12% is its sweet spot. Unscented it's hard and brittle; the fragrance is what softens it.

The fat builds the bar. Coconut oil is solid at 24–26°C and turns liquid the moment your room warms up. At 20–30% of your recipe it gives a hard bar with big, bubbly lather. Push past that and it stops cleaning and starts stripping — and it still won't scent the soap, because saponification erases that.

The fragrance does the actual smelling. Caribbean Coconut for sweet coconut, vanilla and wood. Coconut Lime when you want citrus lift — it goes light brown in cold process. Coconut Milk, built from natural isolates, for gardenia, chamomile and musk. 6–12% in candles, 3–6% in soap; Coconut Lime caps at 10%.

Your Coconut Day pour: 300 g NatureWax C-6 + 24 g Caribbean Coconut, which is 8% on wax weight. Cotton wick, pour at 70–80°C, cure at least a week before you judge the throw. Swapping in Coconut Lime? It flashes at 64.4°C, so let the wax cool before you stir it in.

It’s finally here! Hops essential oil has just landed on the sleep-and-slow-living shelf. 🌿

Green, herbaceous and a little resinous, with an earthy, hay-like edge — hops has been used as a natural sedative for centuries (yes, the same plant that goes into beer). It's a strong pick for calming candle blends, meditation or nighttime diffuser mixes, and it plays well with woods, florals, and other herbaceous oils if you want to round it out.

Your citrus candle smells incredible in the jar, then disappears the moment you light it. That's not a bad pour, it's chemistry. 🍋

Lemon, lime and bergamot are top notes: light molecules that lift fast and burn off just as fast in a hot melt pool. Adding more citrus won't fix it, it just sweats out of the wax and clogs the wick.

Give the citrus something to stand on instead.

Dolce Vita: 70% Italian Limoncello + 30% Tuscan Juniper & Myrtle.

That 30% does the heavy lifting. Juniper & Myrtle sits on incense, vanilla, musk and cedarwood, slow-release notes that keep the citrus in the room. It also opens on myrtle, cypress and green herbs, so it meets the lemon instead of fighting it.

Start at 6% total load, that's where both oils were tested. For 500 g of wax that's 21 g Limoncello and 9 g Juniper & Myrtle. Stir two full minutes, then cure two weeks before you judge it.

This is what your next pour smells like. 🍋

Soy wax isn't the best wax. It's the one everyone starts with — and those aren't the same thing. 🕯️

Three wax rules get repeated everywhere, and each one is only half true. Here's the half that never gets finished.

1️⃣ "Soy is always the best." Soy is a solid container wax, that part holds. But it melts at 45–52 °C, which makes it too soft to hold a pillar's shape. And even in containers it isn't a clear winner — paraffin usually throws stronger, coconut blends give a smoother finish and better glass adhesion. Soy's real edge is that it's plant-based, affordable and easy to find. That's a good wax. It just isn't the answer to every candle.

2️⃣ "Harder wax burns longer." True on paper, with the same wick and everything else held still. Nothing stays still. Hard to the touch isn't the same as a high melt point — additives like stearic acid harden the feel without shifting the melt point to match. And a genuinely higher melt point needs a bigger wick to keep a full melt pool, while bigger wicks draw fuel faster. Burn time is set by the wick, not by how hard the wax feels.

3️⃣ "Natural wax burns cleaner." True about where it comes from — plant-based and renewable, that part is real. But soot comes from the burn, not from the wax type. It's unburned carbon, a fuel and air imbalance. Any wax will soot with a long wick or a draft across the flame. Trim the wick, move the candle out of the draft. That does more than switching wax.

So stop hunting for the best wax and match it to the format instead:

• Containers → soy, a coconut blend or container paraffin
• Pillars and moulds → pillar paraffin or beeswax
• Wax melts → soft, low-melt blends

Then give it time. Soy needs 1–2 weeks to bind. Paraffin is ready in days.

And since we called soy out on finish — frosting isn't a defect. Those pale crystals are soy doing exactly what soy does. Cosmetic only. It doesn't touch the burn or the scent.
