Every level opens a different layer of the work.

Levels 1, 2 and 3 build the foundations of Romiromi and Mirimiri through bodywork, breath, rhythm, touch and energetic awareness.

Level 4 deepens the practice through sound, vibration and intuitive listening.

Level 5 moves further into intuition, elemental healing and the natural rhythms that influence our physical and energetic bodies.

Each level builds upon what came before — not only through new techniques, but through giving, receiving, practising and developing a deeper sensitivity within yourself.

Whether you are beginning your journey, deepening an existing practice or continuing towards Level 5, the teachings are shared through direct experience.

You do not learn this work only by using your hands.

During the Māori Healing Training, everyone learns through both giving and receiving.

By practising on another person, you begin to understand pressure, rhythm, breath, movement and presence.

By lying on the table yourself, you experience how the work enters the body — where you resist, where you soften and what begins to move beneath the surface.

Receiving is not a passive part of the training.
It is part of becoming a more aware practitioner.

Throughout the wānanga, students practise together, observe one another and continue learning through direct experience.

We learn with our hands.
We learn with our bodies.
And we learn through one another.

This summer, Ruatau and his team return from Aotearoa to share the traditional practices of Romiromi and Mirimiri at Kura Waka.

Since 1997, Kura Waka has held a deep relationship with Māori healers — a connection that has now been carried for nearly three decades.

It began when Te Waimatao Oriwia Maharata Tiaki Turoa brought the Māori healers Atarangi, Manu and Bill to the centre.

During his time there, Manu Korewha received a vision — a clear message in which the name Kura Waka came through for the centre. He expressed that even his grandchildren should one day know how to find this place.

Michaela felt this deeply as a responsibility: to keep the doors open and continue creating space for what had been shared and entrusted to her.

We remain grateful for the teachings and healing practices passed down through Te Waimatao and Manu Korewha.

From the tūpuna mātua — the ancestors — these healing practices have flourished over millennia and have been passed down as living tools through tribal and whānau knowledge.

Some traditions developed closer to the sea, others inland, in the forests or in the mountains. As the lands and communities differ, so too can the knowledge, practices and responsibilities carried within them.

This summer, different ways of Romiromi, Mirimiri and Traditional Māori Healing will once again be shared in wānanga at Kura Waka.

A precious time to gather, practise and honour these ancestral teachings — keeping them alive through relationship, respect and lived experience.

Feeling called to joing the Traditional Māori Healing Training?

This summer, we will live, learn and practise together at Kura Waka as teachers from Aotearoa share the traditional practices of Romiromi and Mirimiri.

Your accommodation and organic meals are included, and the teachings are shared in Te Reo Māori, English and Dutch. No previous knowledge of the Māori language is required.

Levels 1–3: 21–31 August
Level 4: 3–8 September
Level 5: 11–18 September

Ruatau is returning to Kura Waka — together with his team from Aotearoa.

Ruatau Perez belongs to Ngāi Tūhoe and Ngāpuhi. He was first introduced to mirimiri by his grandmother and later trained for ten years under Papa Joe. Since 2000, he has practised and shared Rongoā Māori, Romiromi and Mirimiri in Aotearoa and around the world.

Through Te Ara Teatea Trust, Ruatau and his team support people and whānau through traditional healing practices and teachings passed down through generations. Their work is rooted in the connection between physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

This summer, they return to Kura Waka to share the Traditional Māori Healing Training.

During their stay, personal Romiromi & Mirimiri sessions with Ruatau and Rachael can also be booked from 22 August until 17 September.

Some come to learn.
Some first come to receive.

Both can be the beginning of a deeper journey.

"I was there physically, but my presence was not in the driverseat"

Niek’s testimony. After the crash, he knew something had to change. He found Kura Waka and reached out for support. After the first session, he felt back in the driver’s seat of his own life.

Healing begins with the courage to be vulnerable. To take responsibility for your own journey, and to accept support when you need it.

A technique can be copied. Presence cannot.

Romiromi and Mirimiri are not learned as a fixed sequence of movements.

They ask us to listen to the whole person — through the hands, the breath, rhythm, timing and relationship.

This understanding develops through practice, receiving, correction and lived experience.

Michaela at work.. A highlight from last week's exchange

Sometimes the giver also needs to receive. Practitioners of Romiromi and Mirimiri came together at Kura Waka to exchange sessions, reconnect and share their experiences.

It was a beautiful week of giving and receiving, learning from one another and preparing for the Māori Healing Training taking place here this summer.

We look back with gratitude — and forward to welcoming this year’s group of students to Kura Waka.
