Myrtle

They are almost entirely located in tropical regions, particularly in America and Australia. Myrtle can be found in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and Iran as well.

The Myrtle Tree

Myrtle is distinguished by evergreen leaves that contain aromatic volatile oils. Many varieties of myrtle produce flashy blossoms, gums, and resins. The tree produces black berries which, along with the leaves, are used particularly for aromatherapy.

Health Advantages of Myrtle

In as far back as ancient Greece, people cherished the application of myrtle. Greek athletes were said to have worn wreaths of evergreen myrtle leaves during the Olympics. Ancient civilizations believed that myrtle was a symbol of immortality, and they used it in love potions and as treatment for various ailments.

In the era of the Roman Empire, myrtle was used to treat urinary and respiratory ailments. Egyptians used the plant to treat nervous afflictions. French women drank tea made from crushed myrtle leaves, believing that it would help to preserve their youthful appearance and overall vigor. Some actually believed myrtle to hold a cure for cancer, but little evidence was found to prove the theory.

Myrtle has been conventionally used to treat coughs, bronchitis and other respiratory infections. The astringent properties of myrtle have also earned the reputation for promoting good digestion, treating urinary tract disorders, and preventing wound infections. Recent laboratory studies suggest that the herb contains anti-inflammatory substances, making it a viable astringent compound. This finding accounts for the plant's enduring popularity as a wound and cough treatment.

There are other health benefits of myrtle. It is believed to be anti-infective, and can be used as a tonic to hasten the healing process. Healers in Middle Eastern countries have traditionally used myrtle as a treatment for diabetes.

The 1980s saw scientists putting the myrtle herb under the microscope in an attempt to identify the active ingredients that lends it its various medicinal properties. Results of one study indicated that extract from the herb can decrease blood sugar in mice. This explains the association associating myrtle with diabetes. However, there is still no concrete proof that the herb is safe to use and effective for people who have the disease.

Myrtle Extract

Myrtle extract is created from plant's leaves and seeds. Most tests have shown positive results if the plant extract is taken orally and in liquid form. A standard dose is usually around one to two milliliters of the essential oil daily. Be sure that you ask your doctor first before taking it.

Although uncommon, topical myrtle extract formulations can also be used. Again, be sure to use this herbal treatment only under your doctor's supervision.

There are two types of myrtle, and it's important that you do not confuse the two. Myrtuscommunis is known as "true" myrtle, and is the plant described here. The other variety, called "Madagascar Myrtle" (Eugenia jambolana), is a completely different plant and has entirely different effects on the body.

Myrtle is believed to work well with other herbs and nutritional supplements. However, it should not be used if you are taking insulin or oral sulfonylureas. The herb may increase the levels of blood glucose, and reduce the effects of your medications.

Myrtle Essential Oil

Scientific name: Myrtuscommunis. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the shrubs and trees. Myrtle essential oil was used in Biblical purification ceremonies and has been recorded as being in use for medicinal purposes as early as 600 BC. The Myrtle is a symbol of love; it is considered a sacred plant by Aphrodite (goddess of beauty and love) and was used in bridal bouquets and headdresses as a symbol of innocence. It is native to North Africa. It now flourishes throughout the Mediterranean region and is cultivated as a garden shrub throughout Europe. The Myrtle belongs to the same family as Eucalyptus and Tea Tree and has a fresh, camphorous scent reminiscent of Eucalyptus.

1. Wonderful for anything respiratory—cough, cold, asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, etc. It is mild enough to use with children and the elderly. It has traditionally been used to make a cough syrup and to treat chronic chest disorders. Apply to the chest or back with a carrier oil, diffuse, or add 4-5 drops to ¼-1/2 cup Starflake™ plain baths salts and add to warm bathwater. Remember to rinse off afterwards to avoid skin irritations (toxins are drawn to the surface of the skin when you do a soak with salts and essential oils, if left on the skin they can result in a rash or be reabsorbed).

2. Lowers a hyperthyroid (elevated). Add to a carrier oil (the Gergelim&Baru carrier oil is highly recommended for use with the thyroid) and then apply directly to the thyroid area. A side note: Myrrh helps raise the thyroid, so if you are trying to balance an out of balance thyroid you may need to use the oils together.

3. Marvelous for skin care, especially helpful with acne, wounds, and ulcers. It strengthens and tones skin as well as reduces scar tissue and helps clear cysts and water retention. Also makes a great natural deodorant. Add to distilled water to make a spray (shake well before each use) or add a drop or two to a good carrier oil (Gergelim&Baru is especially good for skin care) and then use that to do a facial.

4. Aids in circulation—good for pulmonary challenges as well as strengthening to blood vessels, capillaries, and associated tissues. It is also a powerful diuretic and a

blood thinner (if you are on blood thinner medications always consult with a doctor before using ANY essential oils).

5. Great for bladder infections! Add several drops to Starflake™ bath salts and use in a sitz bath or soak in the tub. Also good for hemorrhoids. Can also be taken internally in a

capsule (2-3 drops with carrier oil, taken at meals) to help fight infection. Take for a week, then re-assess.

6. Having trouble sleeping? Myrtle will often help with insomnia. Diffuse, use in the bath, or apply to the back of the neck and pulse points.

7. Smokers can benefit twice from this oil—it will help strengthen the respiratory system and it aids in kicking the habit. This oil has been used to assist with strengthening the willpower of those who are fighting addictive or self-destructive habits. It has shown positive results with such things as smoking, drug abuse, anger, greed, envy, and even fear.

8. Myrtle has often been used to balance hormones. Apply to the bottom of the feet and the ankles. If you are a female having difficulties maintaining a proper cycle also apply to the o***y area (follow with a warm compress).

9. Very useful in clearing prostate congestion. Add a few drops to a carrier oil and gently massage on location, follow with a warm compress. Or apply Myrtle to the bottom of the feet and the ankles. Or add 10 drops to one ounce of carrier oil and apply as a re**al implant (maintain as long as possible or overnight). Or, take 2-3 drops in a capsule with carrier oil with each meal for a week, then re-assess.

10. Has a calming and relaxing effect on the endocrine and nervous systems. This helps relieve pain, tension, and stress that most of us experience, additionally it can be helpful in relieving the hyper emotions and nerves associated with such challenges as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, vertigo, shaky limbs, and anxiety.

*Only use essential oils internally that are truly 100% pure, such as Be Young oils. Oils that are cut or synthetic can have dangerous side effects if used internally. Always error on the side of caution and use common sense.

Wild Honeysuckle ( Lonicera ) (gulla mina)
Medica

trying to key out some wonderful smell traveling through the warm air…. strangely enough, it was emanating from this little purple and green leaved bush/vine creature whose identity I’d never been able to key out before. I looked down and the creature was bursting with creamy colored Honeysuckle blossoms! I’ve tried growing Japanese Honeysuckle here for the medicinal uses (and because I grew up in love with the feral Honeysuckle that had invaded my island home) but it always shriveled up and died in the dry air here. So imagine my absolute ~delight~ to find a Wild Canyon Honeysuckle vine/bush, and imagine my jumping up and down thrill to discover that the whole canyon is actually filled with them (all these evidently previously invisible green creatures) and just about to burst into bloom, prime time for harvesting!!!

I’ve used the dried flowers on occasion and have always been impressed by their effects in wounds, cold/flu and fevers. I’ll describe here my current knowledge and then, as with Pulsatilla, come back and update when I get to know the plant on a more intimate level.

Lonicera spp.
Names: Honeysuckle, Jin Yin Hua, Woodbine, Goat’s Leaf
Energetics: cold, dry, bitter/sweet
Primary Actions: clears heat, alterative, immune stimulant, expectorant, diuretic, antispasmodic, strongly antiviral and antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, uterine stimulant, relaxant nervine, astringent, lymphatic
Primary organs: Stomach, lungs, liver
Parts used: flower buds (primary in TCM), flowers, leaves, stem, root (berries are said to be cathartic/emetic, haven’t tried them).

Most popular in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Honeysuckle also has a strong history of use among Native Amercians, Europeans and other peoples.

Like it’s cousin the Elderberry, Honeysuckle is considered to be strongly antibacterial and antiviral, and Michael Tierra has even suggested that it is the “Echinacea of Chinese Medicine”. Tierra also says that recent studies in China show it to be an effective treatment for certain cancers, especially breast cancer. My research indicates that flower has recently been successfully used in the clinical suppression and treatment of AIDS and has a history of widespread use with Pneumonia, asthma and respiratory infections/viruses. It is commonly utilized in TCM for acute cold and flu external type afflictions accompanied by fever and other heat signs. It is in this context I have had the most successful experience with and I plan on trying it together with Elderberry and Rosehip in the near future, I think they’ll make a fabulous trio.

Because of it’s broad antimicrobial action against a variety of bugs including strep, staph, salmonella and pseudomonas, it’s very useful both internally and externally for any inflamed infection. Honeysuckle’s mild and safe action make it safe in appropriate circumstances even in children and elders. It also has a place in the treatment of acute, hot urinary tract infections, damp heat in the stomach, ulcers, acute hepatitis, hot upper respiratory infections, menstrual cramps, arthritis and some forms of high blood pressure. I imagine it will be of use in hyperacid stomach conditions but have not yet confirmed this. The short list of uses above is not meant to be all inclusive, these are merely a few suggestions for what might be appropriate uses considering Honeysuckle’s energy and affinities. Also, please note that this is a plant most suited for hot, feverish and acute problems as well as to overheated, hot excess people and not so much for the cold and deficient as it is very cooling in temperature.

Culpeper would disagree with me, and in fact said that:

Honeysuckles are cleansing, consuming and digesting, and therefore no way fit for inflammations. Take a leaf and chew it in your mouth and you will quickly find it likelier to cause a sore mouth and throat than cure it. If it be not good for this, what is it good for?
Now I’m not sure what Honeysuckle Culpeper was chewing on, but our species is definitely cooling and is in fact, traditionally used for sore, inflamed throats. Perhaps European Honeysuckles are more warming than American or Asian? I’d love to know…

I’ve also found it to be exceptionally useful in stress headaches aggravated by heat (a common occurrence in New Mexico I’m afraid).

It’s very healing on wounds, boils, psoriasis (use internally and externally), hot swellings, abscesses, rashes, skin irritations and the like. I’ve only used the diluted tincture and fomentation for this, but I’m going to be trying out an oil of the flowers and flower buds in the next week, I’m so hoping to infuse some of that intoxicating fragrance!

Based on my experiences with the plant, it seems to impart a sense of presence and appreciation of surroundings, allowing one to release tension or anxiety and be fully in the moment. I need to go check out the flower essence book though.

Considering the way Japanese Honeysuckle flourishes (most would say it is invasive, on par with Kudzu and Multiflora Rose, thank goodness they’re all wonderfully medicinal plants) in many parts of the country and how many native species of Lonicera there are it seems as if this underused medicine should be granted a bit more popularity!

And in other news, I’m officially studying with Michael Moore now, his was my first herb book (not counting that silly Rodale’s Herbal Encyclopedia I slept with all the time when I was like six, how embarrassing) and his knowledge of SW plants is so enormous I feel like I can’t pass up an opportunity to work with my region’s preeminent herbalist. I think I might have signed up just for the 4,000 plant monographs that comes with the course, good lord…. I’m also excited to see the Howie Brounstein is teaching lots of parts of the course, since I’ve always loved his work. There’s also lovely sections on ethnobotany taught by great herbalists like Phyllis Hogan and Julie Cordero.
