Support4Resilience

Support4Resilience A groundbreaking EU project aimed at revolutionizing elderly care, making it more supportive, endurable and resilient.

Our mission is to empower healthcare leaders with innovative tools that foster resilience and improve mental wellbeing among caregivers. European elderly care faces labor shortages, inadequate staffing, and a disconnect between demand and capacity, leading to stress and burnout among caregivers. Support4Resilience (S4R) aims to address these challenges by creating a research-based Toolbox. This To

olbox will assist healthcare leaders in enhancing the resilience and mental wellbeing of both formal and informal caregivers. It will identify factors affecting resilience and mental health, develop new theories, and offer cost-effective interventions. The S4R Toolbox comprises mapping, reflection, and reorganization tools, tailored for various healthcare contexts. Implemented in six European countries, it will be evaluated for effectiveness and cost-efficiency, supporting the development of resilient health systems in elderly care. The project is funded by the European Union. However, the views and opinions expressed are those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Health & DigitalExecutive Agency. After months of reviewing evidence, co-designing solutions and working closely with healthcare leaders, workers and informal caregivers, the Support4Resilience Toolbox is now being implemented.

This marks an important milestone for the project. Across participating countries, local leaders are being trained to use the toolbox and introduce it into their elderly care settings through a series of Local Learning Collaborative sessions.

Our latest blog shares how the implementation has started in Spain and the feedback received during the first training sessions. The photos below capture yesterday's session, where local leaders came together to explore the toolbox.

On 12 June, our partners at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna hosted the second Local Learning Collaborative (LLC) with leaders from Fondazione Casa Cardinale Maffi, a residential elderly care facility in Italy.

LLCs are small, structured working sessions where leaders and researchers come together to explore and reflect on the S4R Toolbox in real organizational settings.

This second session opened with leaders sharing their experiences using the mapping tool with colleagues and family members since the first workshop. Then, the session focused on Tool 2: Improve, which combines a learning component for leaders with a reflection component carried out together with staff. The goal: turn knowledge into everyday practice.

This is just one of many LLCs taking place across the project's partner countries. More to come. 🌍

A couple of weeks ago, the implementation phase of the S4R Toolbox officially began in Italy with a working meeting between representatives of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and leaders of the Fondazione Casa Cardinale Maffi Onlus.

These meetings are an important step in moving from research to everyday practice, learning directly from professionals working in care settings and adapting the toolbox to real organisational needs.

Thank you to everyone involved for the collaboration, shared reflections and commitment to improving wellbeing in elderly care.

Today we had our Support4Resilience WP4 monthly meeting, bringing partners together to share progress from across countries and align on the next steps ahead.

Partners reviewed the Local Learning Collaboratives (LLCs) held so far, shared updates on cRCT response rates across countries, and discussed the next steps for implementation. We also focused on practical next steps around data collection for the project’s evaluation, including how to gather comparable information across different national contexts.

One more month, these meetings help us stay aligned, learn from each other’s progress, and move forward together! 💪

How can leaders strengthen resilience in elderly care?

On this World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we highlight the crucial role of leadership in fostering safe and supportive workplaces.

A new systematic review by Support4Resilience synthesizes 134 studies to explore what supports both individual and organizational resilience among healthcare workers and informal caregivers.

The findings highlight a reciprocal relationship: resilient organizations help individuals thrive, and resilient individuals contribute to stronger organizations. Leaders play a pivotal role, not only by providing structural support but also by fostering trust, collaboration, and wellbeing. Yet, research shows a critical gap in how leadership can support informal caregivers, a key part of the care system.

How can we better understand resilience in healthcare?

Our recent study introduces the Resilience in Healthcare Capacities Assessment (RHCA), a survey designed to help organisations measure and monitor resilience in everyday practice.

Based on ten key capacities, from communication and leadership to risk awareness and learning, the tool was developed and tested with healthcare professionals. The initial results show strong reliability and meaningful connections with staff wellbeing and patient safety.

This kind of research helps move from theory to action, giving healthcare teams practical ways to reflect, improve and sustain quality care under pressure.

This week, our team gathered (both in person and online) for our annual meeting, this time in Turku, Finland. 🙌

Over three days, we ran hands-on workshops with the S4R Toolbox, received insights from our Expert Advisory Board, explored WP4 implementantion plans across six countries, and even shared updates with our sister projects Apollo 2028 and WELL CARE, among other topics.

A full agenda, full of collaboration, learning, and ideas. Huge thank you to everyone who participated, whether in person or online.

What supports resilient performance and mental well-being in home care settings?

Healthcare professionals delivering care in patients’ homes face high workloads, complex demands, and emotional strain. Evidence from the Support4Resilience project highlights that resilient performance and mental well-being are shaped not just by individual effort, but by collaboration, leadership, structure, and organizational support.

Key factors include:

- Collaborative team culture: informal learning, handovers, and mutual support boost adaptability.

- Accessible leadership: visible, approachable leaders build trust, guidance, and psychological safety.

- Structured work: clear roles, routines, and documentation reduce uncertainty and stress.

- Adaptive strategies: individual coping techniques, such as task prioritization, are most effective when supported by a collaborative culture and clear organizational structure.
