On Wednesday evening, 29th July, we are gathering for a Sufiyana mehfil in celebration of the Urs of our friend and Sufi teacher, Murshid Kiran Rana.
In the Sufi tradition, an Urs is understood as a wedding: the teacher’s passing from this world into union with the Beloved. Sufis have found a way to place grief and celebration in the same cup, and then, being human, occasionally spill both.
A mehfil is not is a gathering shaped by whoever arrives and whatever arrives with them: music, poetry, silence, laughter, tears, stories, longing, belonging, and hopefully enough tea.
Kiran’s invitation was simple:
Love More.
Especially when the heart would rather close.
Human More.
Bring the tender, awkward, unfinished person too.
Mystery More.
Because pretending we know what is going on has become rather exhausting.
We will begin with a heart-centered practice and meditation, then open the mehfil to qawwali, songs, poetry, zikr, silence, stories and tea.
Bring an instrument, a song, a poem, a story, or something of your own to share. Or bring nothing but yourself.
Come meet something of Sufi Kiran in the friendship, laughter and spaciousness he left alive among us.
All are warmly welcome.
