On 5 August 1963 Nelson Mandela was arrested and later sentenced to five years in prison. He would stay imprisoned for 27 years. Most of the time he spent in the prison at Robben Island off the coast of South Africa.

In 1993, three years after he was released from prison, Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Prize on Peace category. The prize was shared with South African president Frederik Willem de Klerk "for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa."
