Christmas in our whare is all of this and acknowledging those each year past and present. This year my whānau lost two loved siblings both my parents lost a sister and our nephew. We are forever greatful and reminded at Christmas dinner that as each year passes someone loses someone close and we take this time to remember them…….to reflect and to be present as each year passes so does another ❣️🎈
2024 looks prosperous x

Pōhutukawa nectar kai of old has a crystallised dusting inside the bloom that hangs high up in this rakau my aunties an uncles share it is the Kai of old, and it was always sweeter the higher u climbed today it is a fav Kai for our native Manu.

It’s also the tree that connects us with our loved ones Pōhutukawa and rātā hold a prominent place in Maori mythology. Legends tell of the young Maori warrior, Tawhaki and his attempt to find help in heaven to avenge his father's death. He subsequently fell to earth and the crimson flowers are said to represent his blood.

For Māori this small tree is known as ‘the place of leaping’. It is from here that the spirits of the dead begin their return journey to their traditional homeland of Hawaiki. The spirits leap off the headland and climb down the roots of the 800-year-old tree, descending into the underworld

Rātā was often respected for its immense size, which provided, among other things, shelter for weary travellers.

I walked into the Ngahere hoping to find Tanekaha, Tataramoa and Tupakahi.

Tataramoa found me 10mins into the track, Tanekaha had fallen over and rested over the path I walked past and steered deeply into me after that Tanekaha spread like a woven backdrop of long Pou and went on what felt like ages but actually once I arrived to the Wetlands more Fernery and Punga present no more Tanekaha!
As I walked out off the track at the entrance tot he track a burnt patch of a shrub caught my eye, aaah Tupakahi hung over the shrub of course it’s dead that’s the deep heat of the Ngahere taking over and there she majestically hung and my harvest was complete!

I love Otara Flea Market, but that’s not Māori Culture that’s Multi Cultured. So I’m stoked to hear of a new designed space opening up in

Wynyard Quarter.

In what is claimed to be the world’s largest Polynesian city, where is one to find any evidence of Maori or Polynesian culture in the downtown area? Until the Waka was erected, there was nothing. One must travel up the hill to the War Memorial Museum to experience anything of substance - and that....
