Breathing distress isn’t just about breathing fast.

One of the most important things to look at is your child’s work of breathing — how hard their body is working to get air in and out.

You may notice nasal flaring, recession around the neck or ribs, head bobbing, grunting, increased tummy movement or other muscles helping with breathing.

But always look at the whole child, too. Their colour, alertness, ability to feed/drink and whether they can talk or cry normally all matter.

🚨 Call 111 for severe breathing difficulty, blue/grey lips or tongue, pauses in breathing, or if your child becomes floppy or unresponsive.

Save this for later — it’s something every parent should know how to recognise. 🤍

Nestwise is officially LIVE. 🥹🌿

Created by a paediatric nurse, a mum, and someone who has spent far too much time googling things at 2am even though I literally work in child health.

Nestwise was made to give parents calm, practical, evidence-based guidance for the moments when you’re tired, worried, second-guessing yourself, or just need someone to tell you what to actually look for.

You can now shop:
Newborn Care Guide — Birth to 12 weeks
and
Paediatric Mild Illness & Injury Guide — 3 months to 5 years

Available in physical and interactive mobile formats.

Honestly, launching this while trying to get a toddler into bed after working overnight feels extremely on-brand.

Thank you so much to everyone who has followed along, shared posts, entered giveaways, sent encouragement, tested things, and supported this little idea as it turned into something real. 🤍

Nestwise is live.
And I may now go to sleep for approximately 14 hours.

Apparently the ideal time to launch a business is at toddler bedtime after a night shift 😂

So naturally… here we are.

After months of designing, rewriting, testing, changing things, changing them back, overthinking absolutely everything, and repeatedly telling myself “I’ll launch when it’s perfect”…

Wheeze can be one of those symptoms that sounds really scary, especially when it seems to show up every time your child gets a cold. 🤍

Viral-induced wheeze is common in young children and happens when a viral infection causes the small airways in the lungs to narrow.

The important part isn’t just how noisy the wheeze sounds 👉 it’s how your child is breathing overall.

Watch for:
• increased work of breathing
• sucking in around the ribs or neck
• difficulty talking, drinking or feeding
• becoming unusually tired or distressed
• symptoms getting worse rather than better

And remember: wheeze does not automatically mean asthma.

Save this carousel for the next cough-and-cold season, and share it with another parent who might find it helpful. 🤍

This post is for general education only and does not replace individual medical assessment. If you’re worried about your child’s breathing, seek medical advice. In an emergency in NZ, call 111.

When kids are sick, keeping fluids up can become one of the hardest parts.

If they’re vomiting, have diarrhoea, a fever, or just feel miserable, they may refuse their usual drinks.

That’s where little and often can help.

You don’t always need to get a full cup into them. A few sips every few minutes can be much easier to tolerate.

The big things I’d watch are:
Are they drinking something? Are they still weeing? And do they look reasonably alert and responsive?

Save this one for the next sick day 🤍

POV: you’re a paeds nurse on your day off after a ✨character-building✨ shift and the house desperately needs cleaning…

So naturally, I spent my time learning the dance to Zara Larsson’s Midnight Sun instead. 💃🏼😂

Was it productive? No.
Did it heal something in me? Potentially.

The washing can wait. Apparently this was urgent. 🤍
