So in love with these teensy tiny blooms of the NZ native Hangehange or NZ privet. They’re so small it’s a bit of a trick to set them in a vase and get a decent angle as they’re also very upright!

These are spring blooms that I photographed last year and what’s so magic about them is that they have the most delectable spicy scent. But of course they’re so small that unless you’re in the know, you probably would likely walk right past them and not even suspect that they were the source!

Madly cutting blooms to save them from this wild tropical cyclone. It seems to have become the norm these days for a wild storm with unsympathetic easterly gusts to come in just as the blooms are opening! 😭
The silver lining is I’ve managed to get a bunch picked and lots of my neighbours are keen to have some fresh picked bouquets in their homes. I’ve shrouded my dear favourite “Otto’s Thrill” in a plant blanket and fingers crossed it comes out the other side with all buds intact! 🤞🏼

Gosh I am so pleased the year has turned over and we’re in 2026 for a fresh start. Like so many of you, I found last year tough (for many reasons) and I know that life can’t be peachy sweet all the time, but please this year let’s have more humanity, community and serenity.
